This paper focused on the Swedish preschool teachers’ perspectives on democratic values who were inspired by Reggio Emilia’s approach. Sweden is a democratic country where preschools and child centres are part of the school system and are based on democracy. After the Reggio Emilia approach was introduced to Sweden in 1981, it has been developed to today. In Reggio Emilia-inspired preschools, children are encouraged to explore and express themselves through many different languages or communication media. In this way, children’s voices are included and valued and they can experience democracy. Furthermore, the preschool teachers’ perspective on democratic values affects the children’s participation, perception, and understanding of democratic values in preschools. Hence, this study aims to understand the perspectives of Swedish preschool teachers on Reggio Emilia’s approach to democratic values and the ways these values are demonstrated in the children’s participation. Therefore, three preschool teachers and one ReMida pedagogue were recruited from convenience and snowball sampling and participated in semi-structured interviews. The results of this study shows that Group, Difference, Listening, and Expression are the four main democratic values that the preschool teachers observed in the children’s participation. Dewey’s theory of democracy was used as a framework for this study. Moreover, the study also includes the Swedish preschool curriculum to discuss the preschool teachers’ perspectives on the four democratic values. However, further research is needed to investigate how democratic values are perceived between Swedish preschools with different pedagogical approaches
