Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of thesis is to investigate how can the innovative Manufacturing Execution Systems be implemented in the manufacturing organizations. To achieve the purpose of this thesis, two research questions are formulated.RQ1: What are the core functions of an innovative Manufacturing Execution System?

RQ2:How can an innovative Manufacturing Execution System be implemented?

Method: To achieve a goal of the purpose, a literature review had been carried out before the official start of this study. The literature review was helpful in term of finding the directions for the research and identifying the gaps between theory and practice. In this study, after the literature review, the researchers had an opportunity to carry out a case study in an automotive manufacturing company based on observations, document analysis and interview.

Findings: The functionality is one of the key concerns that has been studied in this thesis, and it is demonstrated in this thesis that different organizations can have different considerations regarding the functionality segmentations. The implementation is another key concern of this thesis. The research summarized the general guideline of MES implementation.

Limitations: This study is typically discussing about the production systems in automotive manufacturing organisations; therefore, the conclusion and results of this study might not be valid for organizations outside of the automotive industry. Furthermore, MES is not the only system that operating in the production activities. This study would only focus on the scope within the system boundary of MES.
