Abstract [en]

The following study looks into the various exercises that are used to teach oral skills in a Swedish year 9 class. The findings of the study are based on interviews with pupils who discuss the pros and cons with these exercises and how they think that these exercises can improve. The pupils that participate also discuss their thoughts about the purpose of learning English as well as their thoughts about motivation and its impact on their achievements.

The pupils that participate in the study argue that it is important for them to learn English so that they can communicate with people from other countries. The participants speak about various situations where English can be useful, for example at work or when travelling. Furthermore, the pupils discuss some of the oral exercises they use in class and how they work with them. These assignments are conducted in accordance with the English syllabus of secondary school and can include tasks such as presentations and group discussions. The pupils argue that motivation has a great impact on why and how they do an exercise in school. The pupils mention personal interest as a factor that contributes to increased motivation and say that topics that do not interest them demotivate them and make it less likely for them to complete an assignment.
