Food Supply Chain (SC) disruptions and their causes are an essential and long-standing theme that has been investigated in much research with proposals for possible improvements. A supply chain disruption can have severe economic consequences and must be handled correctly. To the best of our knowledge, the global COVID-19 pandemic and its factors causing a global food supply chain disruption and a possible resilience strategy has been researched by only very few researchers. This hole on the literature leads to our research question, "In what way can a private food retailer create a resilient supply chain during the COVID-19 pandemic?” To gain a better understanding of this topic, we applied a qualitative research methodology with a single-case study to investigate and analyze factors and challenges of food supply chain disruptions and possibilities to improve the resilience of a firm’s SC. We collected in-depth empirical data with the help of semi-structured interviews conducted with eleven employees working in different areas, closely operating within a food supply chain. By applying an abductive research approach, we could compare our findings to existing literature and extend previous theories. We clustered the findings of our interviews into seven dimensions, where three were based on factors that can cause a supply chain disruption and four focusing on resilience initiatives. All supply chain disruption challenges and resilience initiatives were grouped, analyzed, and served as a starting point towards developing a suitable resilience strategy. Our research was concluded with a "Resilience Guide for a Pandemic," summarizing our findings and providing an overview of how a food retailer can review and modify their current resilience strategy. Thereby, we deliver valuable insights into what factors cause a food supply chain disruption during a pandemic and what actions must be completed to create a long-lasting resilience strategy for a firm’s SC.
