En av dagens mest framträdande film-och tv-produktioner är projekt baserade på amerikanska superhjältar. Dessa karaktärer har länge dominerat serietidningsindustrin, men har genom film-och tv-adaptioner under framförallt 2000-talet vuxit till att tilltala en bredare målgrupp och således ha en större inverkan på populärkulturen och vårt sociala samspel. En av dessa produktioner är HBO och Damon Lindelofs tv-serie Watchmen. Watchmen, baserat på en grafisk novell med samma namn, dekonstruerar på många sätt superhjältegenren och sammanfogar genrens troper med samhällskritik. En stor del av Watchmen’s samhällskritik är grundad i vad skaparen och manusförfattaren Damon Lindelof ser som dagens största hot mot det amerikanska folket, strukturell rasism.

Denna studie ämnar undersöka hur Watchmen förmedlar denna uttalade samhällskritik genom sin visuella retorik. Detta i ett syfte för att bidra till forskningen kring visuell retorik inom populärkulturen och bidra till en djupare förståelse för de budskap Lindelof ämnar förmedla inom ramverken och troperna från den valda genren. Via ett urval av tre scener, som tillsammans narrativt följer utvecklingen av karaktären “Will Reeves/Hooded Justice” ämnar studien att undersöka budskap och symbolik som förmedlas retoriskt genom postkolonial teori.

Resultatet visar att Watchmen använder sig av flera starkt känslomässiga argumentativa metoder. I huvudsak används pathos och evidentia, för att genom starka känslor porträttera rasistiskt grundade aspekter av amerikansk historia tillsammans med flera genretroper. Resultatet visar således att Will Reeves inte är så mycket en dekonstruktion av genren framför en på många sätt ordinär amerikansk maskerad hjälte sedd ur en annan synvinkel av amerikansk historia. Vidare visar resultatet på förmedlade budskap och teorier som hybriditet och kolonial ångest.

One of the most prominent tropes in movie and tv productions today are projects based on American superheroes. These characters have dominated the comic book industry over a long period of time, but through adaptations on film and tv, during the 21st century, the target audience have grown larger. This has led to its bigger influence on popular culture and in our social interactions. One of the latest adaptations entering the plethora of comic book adaptations is 2019s Watchmen on HBO with showrunner Damon Lindelof at the helm. Watchmen, which is based on a graphic novel with the same name, deconstructs many of the comic book genre tropes and includes social commentary. A big part of the show's social commentary is found in what creator Damon Lindelof views as today's biggest threat to the American people, systemic racism.

This study intends to examine the way Watchmen mediates this expressed social commentary through its visual rhetorics. The purpose of this being to contribute to the research of visual rhetorics within popular culture and a deeper understanding of the messages Lindelof wants to mediate to the Watchmen audience. Through a rhetoric method a selection of three scenes following the character “Hooded Justice/Will Reeves” in chronological order is made. The study means to examine the underlying messages and symbolism which are put into the show in the context of postcolonial theory.

The result shows that Watchmen uses multiple vividly emotional argumentative methods. The most used arguments are through pathos and evidentia, because of the strong imagery based in the racism and hate American history contains. Furthermore, the result has shown “Will Reeves” to not be a deconstruction of the American superhero. Instead he becomes more of an ordinary American “superhero” who is grounded in the reality that he lived. Finally, the result conveyed messages and theories such as hybridity and colonial anxiety.
