The overall purpose of the study has been to explore how professionals who work with the Sex Purchase Act relate to and experience the Swedish Sex Purchase Act. Furthermore, the purpose has been to explore how the Sex Purchase Act affects those who buy sex and those who sell sex according to professionals. The study has been based on the following research questions: What do professionals who work with the Sex Purchase Act think is the purpose of the Sex Purchase Act? How are those who buy sex affected by the Sex Purchase Act according to professionals who work with the Sex Purchase Act? How are those who sell sex affected by the Sex Purchase Act according to professionals who work with the Sex Purchase Act? The Study has had a qualitative research approach and has been based on nine semi-structured interviews with professionals who work with the Sex Purchase Act and we have with the help of interviews intended to explore their opinions. The results from the interviews have been compared to previous research in the field and it has also been discussed from a feminist theory, symbolic interactionism and stamp theory. The interviewees in our study highlighted that the purpose of the Sex Purchase Act is an attempt to equalize the balance of power between men and women. They also considered that the Sex Purchase Act has a protective function for women who are in prostitution by not criminalizing these women. The interviewees also considered that women who are in prostitution are victims of men´s violence. Finally, they considered that since prison is on the scale of punishment, it should also be possible to sentence them to prison. No prison sentence for sex purchases has yet been handed out in Sweden. It has been possible to question how effective the Swedish Sex Purchase Act has been, as there was simply no evidence that sex purchases in the country have decreased.  

Studiens övergripande syfte har varit att utforska hur professionella som arbetar med sexköpslagen förhåller sig till och upplever den svenska sexköpslagen. Vidare har syftet varit att utforska hur sexköpslagen påverkar de som köper sex och de som säljer sex enligt professionella. Studien har utgått från följande forskningsfrågor: Vad anser professionella som arbetar med sexköpslagen är syftet med sexköpslagen? Hur påverkas de som köper sex av sexköpslagen enligt professionella som arbetar med sexköpslagen? Hur påverkas de som säljer sex av sexköpslagen enligt professionella som arbetar med sexköpslagen? Studien har haft en kvalitativ forskningsansats och har utgått från nio semistrukturerade intervjuer med professionella som arbetar med sexköpslagen och vi har med hjälp av intervjuer ämnat att utforska deras åsikter. Resultatet från intervjuerna har ställts mot tidigare forskning på området och även diskuterats ur feministisk teori, symbolisk interaktionism och stämplingsteori. Intervjupersonerna i vår studie belyste att syftet med sexköpslagen är ett försök till att jämna ut maktobalansen mellan män och kvinnor. De ansåg också att sexköpslagen har en skyddande funktion för kvinnor som befinner sig i prostitution genom att den inte kriminaliserar dessa kvinnor. Intervjupersonerna ansåg även att kvinnor som befinner sig i prostitution är offer för mäns våld. De ansåg slutligen att eftersom fängelse finns i straffskalan borde det också kunna dömas ut. Ännu har inget fängelsestraff för sexköp delats ut i Sverige. Det har gått att ifrågasätta hur effektiv den svenska sexköpslagen har varit, eftersom det helt enkelt saknades bevis på att sexköpen i landet har minskat.
