Abstract [en]

With the Volvo Car Corporation's aim of implementing 25% of recycled/sustainable plastics in the car by 2025, the thesis project in collaboration with Volvo Cars aims to research the new sustainable material solutions for the sealing system of the vehicle. As the sealing is a co-extruded material, there are several materials included in one profile, hence the initial research has been conducted on what are the various materials in the sealings, what is the functionality of the material, and also the weights. Therefore the initial analysis has been made on possible material to be replaced and the research has been conducted on available sustainable materials that could replace the existing virgin materials.

The thesis project detail the two sustainable TPV materials which have been tested and evaluated on various properties with respect to the Volvo Car Corporation standards. Tensile test, hardness test, material ageing, UV ray test, Interior emission tests have been performed on both the current materials used in the sealings and also the sustainable materials. The test results of both the virgin and sustainable materials have been evaluated and compared to analyze the optimal replacement.
