The energy efficiency in two knee units measured in elderly unilateral Transfemoral amputees: A comparison between a microprocessor knee and a non-microprocessor knee using physiological cost index.

Abstract [en]
Aim: The purpose for this study is to investigate if there is a reason for P&Os, to prescribe microprocessor knee (MPK) unit to elderly transfemoral amputees with vascular diseases. Based on the differences in energy efficiency between an MPK-unit group and a mechanical knee-unit group and their daily prosthetic use, activity and confidence level.
Study design: A cross-sectional study with a qualitative questionnaire.
Subjects: Six participants, all transfemoral amputated because of vascular disease, two mechanical knees and four MPK units divided into two groups.
Method: PCI was measured in a five-minute walking test in a self-chosen comfortable walking pace (SCCP) on a 30-metre corridor/track. The HR was expected to reach a steady state HR within these five minutes and was measured by a TomTom chest band. Along with a modified Q-TFA and ABC-scale questionnaire
Results: The PCI value shows descriptive that the MPK unit users is lower than the mechanical knee unit users, and they have a more active daily life with better confidence than the mechanical knee unit group.
Conclusion: The project finds a tendency toward the MPK unit is a better choice for elderly transfemoral amputees, with respect to the energy efficiency and an active daily life and higher confidence level. But further research is needed.
