Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur professionella som arbetar med män som utsätts för våld i nära relationer ser på det problemet. Syftet är också att undersöka hur våld i nära relationer mot män kan kopplas till normer, maskulinitet och genus, samt hur dessa faktorer påverkar männen som är utsatta för våld i nära relationer. För att uppfylla syftet med studien genomförs tio semistrukturerade intervjuer. Studiens teoretiska ramverk består av Yvonne Hirdmans genusteori samt Raewyn Connells teorier kring maskulinitet. Den insamlade empirin analyseras sedan genom en tematisk analys.

Utifrån tidigare forskning och insamlad empiri om mäns utsatthet i nära relationer står det klart att de normer som finns i samhället påverkar män som är utsatta för våld i nära relationer. Enligt normen ska en man inte vara utsatt för våld i nära relation och ska inte heller prata om känslor. Detta påverkar i sin tur mäns hjälpsökande och vad de känner för att söka hjälp. Män är ofta fysiskt större och starkare än kvinnor, vilket påverkar hur de ser på sig själva som våldsutsatta. Exempelvis gör det att män är mindre rädda för våldet i nära relation i jämförelse med kvinnor som är utsatta. Det visas också på att den kontext och de erfarenheter mannen har är av större vikt än kön när det talas om våld i nära relation. 

I diskussionen belyses förhållandet mellan männens rädsla för att söka hjälp samt deras oräddhet för det våld de blir utsatta för lyfts fram och diskuteras. Vikten av kön i förhållande till mäns utsatthet för våld i nära relationer diskuteras också med utgångspunkt i de motsägelser som uttryckts av de professionella. 

The purpose of the following study is to examine how professionals working with the issue interpret the social problem with men experiencing intimate partner violence. The purpose is also to examine how intimate partner violence against men is related to norms, masculinity and gender theory and how these factors affect the men who experience intimate partner violence. In order to achieve the aim of this study, ten semi structured interviews are conducted. The theoretical approach consists of Yvonne Hirdman’s gender theory and Raewyn Connell’s theory of masculinities. The collected data is later analysed through a thematic analysis.

As a result of previous research regarding intimate partner violence against men and the information gathered from the interviews it is clear that the societal norms affect the men who experience intimate partner violence. According to the norms, a man is not supposed to be the victim of intimate partner violence and not supposed to talk about their feelings. In turn, this affect to which extent men choose to reach out for professional help and how they feel when doing so. Men are usually physically bigger and stronger than women, which affect their relation to being exposed to violence. For example, it makes them less afraid of the violence in comparison to women who are exposed. Another thing that is clear is that the men’s context and experiences are of greater importance than gender, in relation to intimate partner violence.

In the discussion, men’s fear of seeking help and their fearlessness of the violence they are exposed to, are discussed in relation to each other. The importance of gender is discussed in relation to intimate partner violence, with starting point in the contradictions expressed of the professionals.
