Abstract [en]
Purpose – The purpose of the study is to investigate how the case company can exploit their new increased capacity. To accomplish the purpose, two research questions have been formulated:
- 1. Is value stream mapping applicable to the case company's production?
- What non-value adding activities can be identified in the production?
Method – To answer the research questions formulated, a qualitative study with a deductive research approach has been carried out. First of all, a literature review was conducted to identify previous knowledge and theories within the scope of the study. Then followed a pre-study to gain a holistic insight of the current problem and production. Thereafter, empirical material was collected through a case study including interviews, document studies and observations. Throughout the study, triangulation has been applied to assure holistic alignment and that the conclusion is in line with the purpose.
Findings – The study revealed that in this case a value stream mapping is not applicable to the case company’s production. The findings indicated a numerous non-value adding activities that restrains the desired capacity increase. Through the identifications, suggestions have been made to eliminate the non-value adding activities and further increase the desired capacity.
Implications – The thesis shows the restraint possibility to apply VSM in a process industry, unlike a discrete manufacturing where the method originates. The non-value adding activities found have resulted in a discussion towards possible elimination.
Limitations – The research was conducted during the spring of 2020 when COVID-19 pandemic affected the world. Therefore, the communication and accessibility to the case company was limited. Data retrieved from the case company was mainly secondary data which weakens the reliability of the thesis. The results of this research can therefore not be generalizable towards companies with similar preconditions.
