Father ́s experiences of their child emergency medical care in connection with the birth : A qualitative work of improvement (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Summary

Background: The competence of the pediatric nurse covers the ability to communicate and respond to children and their families with sensitivity and respect. Through establishing a relationship with the family and with a foundation in a family centered care, the pediatric nurse will be able to involve the family in the child's neonatal nursing. The participation of the father in the child’s care, facilitates the connection with him and the child, therefore the Attachment Theory was chosen as the theoretical frame of reference for the study.

Purpose: The purpose was to describe the father’s experiences with their child’s emergency care in connection to the birth.

Design and approach: The study was done as a work of improvement at a medium sized hospital in southern Sweden. A qualitative study based on inductive reasoning was conducted in which ten semi structured interviews were held and analysed using qualitative content analysis in accordance with Graneheim och Lundman (2004).

Results: Emerged from the results came the category a cataclysmic circumstance along with the subcategories to choose between two impossible alternatives and unprepared for what to expect. The second category emerged was the importance of a good relationship along with the meaning of communication, the value of good treatment and to get to participate.

Conclusion: The fathers wish for clear and continuous information in cases of emergency concerning the condition of both the mother and the child. The father’s prefer to be accompanied by personnel who isn’t crucial in the emergency care of the child. The fathers express the need of support from healthcare personnel to dare to be near and participate in the emergency care of their child.
