With a globally rising demand for social sustainability, the business leaders are appearing as primary responsible actors to accommodate this demand by adapting one’s leader behavior. As a leader’s team of followers is additionally crucial for an organization’s success, previous research has examined both the leader and the follower, as well as their interpersonal relationship. In this context, the Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) theory plays a crucial role. Besides trust-building, effective communication and providing mutual respect, empathy was identified as an additional key leader skill to improve the relationship with each individual follower. In regards of the influence of a leader’s empathy, little is still known about the leader’s perspective on how a leader’s empathy can contribute to achieving a high-quality LMX relationship. Hence, this study includes both an investigation of pre-existing research linked to this phenomenon and an opposition of empirical findings from the leader’s perspective generated through qualitative interviews with selected leaders.
