Does she ever do anything on her own? : A qualitative text analysis of female characters' agency in film (Swedish)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The subject of strong female characters, especially as protagonists, has been a hot topic in the movie industry the past few years, and the demand is greater than ever. There is, however, not an established definition of what a strong female character is, female strength has generally been defined by being assigned male characteristics. The purpose of this study is to question what a strong female character is as well as contribute with more knowledge of female representation in film, by examining if the female protagonists have agency. The study is based on feminist film theory, focusing on the theory of men as active and women as passive, and representation theory to critically analyze the portrayal of female protagonists.

The material is based on the movies Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel, both of which have been acknowledged because of their female protagonists and female directors in a male dominated genre. The results show that the woman on the one hand is pictured as passive and her female characteristics are portrayed as weaknesses. On the other hand, however, the woman is active, and her female characteristics are portrayed as strengths. For strong female characters to exist, feminine characteristics need to be able to be portrayed as strong. If femininity is nothing but a weakness, there cannot be such a thing as a strong female character.
