Abstract [sv]

Abstract

Gustav Vasa – public hero or tyrant?

Historical writing about Gustav Vasa between 1920-2018.

The purpose of this essay was to see the development in historical writing about Gustav Vasa between the years of 1920-2018. The essay focuses on the historical writing about Gustav Vasa’s personality, his acquisition of power and the uprisings that took place against him. The thesis had, as a theory, that Gustav Vasa’s role as a national symbol, previously has played a major role in the historical writing about him. According to the theory, in that case, the historical writing about Gustav Vasa would change sometime in the middle of the 20th century, which was also the case. It turned out that from the 1920s to the 1950s, there was a predominantly positive writing about Gustav Vasa. After the 1950s, a change in the historical writing about Gustav vasa took place, and the historical writing became less advantageous. What is included in this essay is how and when that change occurred.
