Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study is based upon four columns written by Simon Bank from the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. The columns are about four games from both the men's football world cup that took part in 2018 and the women's football world cup that took part in 2019. There are two columns for each team. The FIFA World Cup is the sporting event that attracted most viewers around the world and the FIFA Women’s World Cup broke its record in 2019 in terms of viewers. The study will be done with critical discourse analysis (CDA) with Anabela Carvalho's (2008, p. 167-171) step by step-model as a tool. Our result will then be discussed with theories of gender studies and hegemony taken into account. Previous studies in these areas have shown that it is more common for women to have texts written about them were their looks and personal life is the main focus instead of their athletic performances and achievements. Studies in hegemony have shown that there is a male hegemony in texts about sports. Both in the amount being reported but also how both genders are represented when either losing of winning a game. Our result shows that there are no significant differences between how the writer is reporting about either of the teams. They are both being viewed based on their performances as athletes and not about their attributes related to their gender. In our analysis we found that there were some linguistic choices that showed a presence of male hegemony in the columns about the male and female games. Something that is shown in previous studies about the presence of male hegemony in sports.
