Abstract [en]

Background

Thanks to the internet, cloud technologies, digital tools, and mobile devices, workers are enabled to work more digitally and overcome geographical borders. The arising digital workplace changes both, how individuals work, and the way companies operate. Despite many positive aspects, such as geographic independence, remote working entails challenges for individual employees.

Purpose

This thesis aims to research employees’ perception of the workplace transformation towards flexible arrangements and its impact on companies. The intention is to investigate how companies can address emerging challenges while offering home office opportunities.

Method

To fulfil the purpose of this exploratory research study, secondary data, in form of a literature review and primary data in form of in-depth interviews are gathered. In total, 16 semi-structured qualitative interviews from four different case companies are conducted. Open coding is used for organizing the data and preparing the analysis.

Conclusion

Even though the overall perception is positive, employees know, that challenges due to home office arise. Based on the findings of this thesis, a guideline with recommendations for action was developed. This generalized guideline should help firms and employees to overcome the challenges within the field of remote working. However, in some cases this guideline requires individual development in regard to the specific company.
