Self-care in diabetes mellitus type 2 : - A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Summary

Title: Self-care in diabetes mellitus type 2. Background: Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2) is a growing disease worldwide. Therefore, the severeness of the disease puts demand on the patient to perform self-care and make lifestyle changes to achieve health. Untreated DMT2 can lead to complications, such as increased morbidity and mortality. The nurse has a facilitating role in transferring knowledge to the patient about self-care. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the experiences of self-care through the perspective of adult patients with DMT2. Method: A literature review was conducted and is based on ten scientific articles with qualitative approach. Data analysis has been conducted according to Polit and Beck´s flow model. Results: Two categories has been identified, lifestyle changes and the importance of support. Additionally, five subcatergories has been recognized, acceptance and control, financial conditions, health care relationships, family and social networks and spirituality and culture. Some significant findings from prior research regard difficulties in changing dietary habits and past lifestyles. Family and health care professionals are highlighted as an important source of support in managing DMT2. Conclusion: Self-care experiences with DMT2 differed between patients. The literature review contributed to increased knowledge and better understandning of the patient´s experiences and why recommended treatment were not followed.
