The essence of the Nordic model is captured in the concept of ‘co-workership’. Co-workership is associated with taking responsibility, higher degrees of employee engagement, participation, and influence and can be considered as a continuation of the Nordic tradition of codetermination and workplace democracy. However, it is a concept that allows for a variety of interpretations, depending on the party who is making the interpretation. Consequently, a number of internal conflicts may emerge. Based on a study of the implementation of co-workership in two different organisations, the chapter reports on factors which promote or hinder the development of co-workership within an organisation.
