Is BIM a successful tool in the construction industry? (English)
Abstract [en]

Purpose: For the last 20 years the construction industry has increased their productivity with approximately 25% compared to other industries that are closer to 100%. Can the reason for this be the increased use of digital tools in other industries when the construction industry is still using 2D-blueprints? This thesis goal is to investigate if BIM (Building Information Modeling), as a digital way of working is a successful tool in the production phase of a construction project and if it can result in a higher production. Method: This thesis is using Delone & McLeans: Information System Success model. The model consists of multiple parameters were data from the new technique is applied to review if there is a possible increase in the productivity. To be able to do this literature and recent reports in the subject were studied and as well as interviews with the users. Findings: From recent research applied on the theory together with data from the interviews a conclusion was made that BIM has the qualifications to be a successful tool in the production phase in the construction industry. From the collected data this report can guarantee a positive outcome of the implementation, but what keeps the BIM from being called a successful tool in this report is that it is not measured in numbers. There need to be further research with collectable numbers about BIM to show in what extent BIM is successful. Implications: This thesis is a case study from Jönköping. All the interviews are executed at the same project, which can have affected this thesis outcome. A suggestion for further research is to investigate two projects with the same extent, one with BIM implemented where all the involved personnel have to use BIM, and one project without BIM. This way the outcome of the thesis can be measured in numbers. Limitations: The report did not intend to answer the efficiency of the BIM-use. Only if BIM can lead to an increased productivity. Furthermore, the research was limited to the production phase of a project since the use of BIM is already established in the design phase. The report was limited to one form of procurement, which in the investigated project is turn-key.
