Does Generation Y deserve its reputation? : A qualitative study of generational and work-related values (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate if Generation Y lives up to their reputation. Fifteen individuals currently in the workforce born between 1980-2000 participated through a purposive sampling. A qualitative research design was used together with semi-structured interviews. Collected data were analyzed with a thematic analysis and the authors examined three main themes: how participants valued work, intrinsic and extrinsic work-related factors and management. Our analysis demonstrated that the most prominent values amongst the participants were: work-life balance (distinction between work and leisure), work to live, development opportunities, a coaching leadership and that they put more emphasis on the type of work rather than the salary. In conclusion, participants representing Generation Y and their typical values as culled from this research can be summarized by the fact that they preferred work to be adjusted to them rather than vice versa.
