Experience of self-care in hypertension : a literature overview. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Hypertension is a people`s disease that can cause other cardiovascular diseases. Because people handle their self-care in different ways, their experiences differ from one another. By seeing how these self-care strategies differ, you get a clearer insight into people’s experiences and how they themselves affect their self-care by changing their living habits.

Aim: to describe experiences of self-care in hypertension.

Method: the literature review was based on 12 qualitative studies. Analysis was performed on the basis of Friberg's five-step model.

Results: in the results, three main categories and ten subcategories are presented. The study described the importance of clear information and support for managing self-care in hypertension. The individuals described various obstacles such as impaired self-care strategies. In some studies, individuals experiences were highlighted by insufficient support and information from healthcare professionals, which impeded self-care measures. In other studies where the people experienced sufficient support and clear information, self-esteem increased positively to perform self-care measures.

Conclusion: Healthcare professionals should respond to people with hypertonia based on person-centered approaches and based on individual needs to promote selfcare. People with hypertonia need training and increased knowledge about their illness to be able to handle their self-care.
