Abstract [en]

Background: Chronic pain has been described as a vast global problem causing human suffering as well as costs to society. Understanding more precisely how chronic pain affects occupational balance of people in working age, might provide perspectives for occupational therapists on how to support these patients. Aim: The aim of this review was to define what is known about the connection between the chronic pain and aspects of occupational balance in adults of working age. Methods: A scoping review was conducted. Searches in 4 different databases and in additional sources resulted in an inclusion of 20 studies. Results: The perspective of occupational balance varied within the articles, as well as the aspects of occupational balance explored in the studies. Connection between chronic pain and aspects of occupational balance was found. Conclusions: There is a lack of research within this topic to cover the whole concept of occupational balance. According to recent literature, there is likely a connection between chronic pain and at least some aspects of occupational balance, but this connection is not simple or straightforward. More systematic research about this complex connection is needed. Meanwhile, paying more attention to occupational balance in pain rehabilitation interventions can be recommended.
