Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to develop a lint handling system for a professional tumble dryer. It has been conducted in collaboration with Electrolux Laundry Systems Sweden AB in Ljungby, Sweden.

The manual cleaning of the lint in tumble dryers is an uncomfortable task for the user, and the accumulation of lint in the system can cause malfunctions. The solution for this problem is the use of a lint handling system to take care of the lint with the minimum user interaction.

The objective is to ideate, develop and test different lint handling systems to evaluate their performance and design a solution to implement in a professional tumble dryer.

The report starts with a theoretical background about industrial design methodology and dryers.

The project is divided into different phases. In the research, several analyses are made to establish the basis for the project: Internet research, user analysis, brand analysis and functional analysis.

After and ideation phase, where through different selection methods two handling systems are chosen to be tested, there is a prototype phase developing the CAD models of both systems.

These prototypes are tested and based on the results three concepts are created to implement a lint handling system in a tumble dryer. One of the three concepts is selected and developed to redesign the external appearance of the dryer based on Electrolux design language and to create the final CAD model. A 1:5 scale physical model is presented.

The final tumble dryer offers a modern look keeping the simplicity of the brand. The dryer is available in three different configurations, each one with a small variation of the lint handling system adapted for different users.
