Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The effect of massage on hypertension – a literature study

Blood pressure is regulated by the autonomic nervous system along with the hormonal system RAAS and is a health risk mainly when it comes to the cardiovascular system. Hypertension is one of the biggest diseases and affects about 27 % of the Swedish population.

The purpose of this study is to see whether massage can affect blood pressure in patients with hypertension and if massage therapy therefor can be used as a supplement to medication.

15 scientific articles about the massage and its effects on blood pressure were studied.

Massage therapy has been shown to have a positive effect when it comes to lowering blood pressure. The results made a visible relaxation of the participations in all examinations. The parasympathetic system was activated, and thereby reduced the secretion of stress hormones which are a significant factor when it comes to hypertension.

Although massage is often seen as a method with no scientific basis, it becomes more and more accepted by the public and the medical activity. More scientific studies need to be done in this ongoing dilemma, where the number of patients with hypertension are constantly increase while knowing the positive impact of massage is growing without being used.
