Abstract [en]

Research has shown that today's religious education is objective and based on facts and primarily consist of teaching materials. This is considered problematic because while studies show that this type of teaching does promote the acceptance of and reduced prejudices about religion and religious people. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the teaching materials for the teaching of religion relate to that part of the curriculum in religious studies which affix a religious education to develop students' understanding of religion and religious people, so that they later in life can face the world with respect. The study is inspired by a hermeneutic research approach and method. The empirical material, which consists of three religious teaching materials have been reviewed on the basis of a theory based on previous research defining the concept of understanding. Through previous research that defines the concept of understanding, three key perspectives have been developed - inside perspective, diverse lighting and reflection and own position. The study’s results reveal how the empirical material relates to the theoretical basis for understanding and show how the different teaching aids inadequately relate to the theory of the concept of understanding, which can have negative consequences for the education.
