Improved efficiency of maintenance processes for SME’s in the IT/consulting sector - A Case Study (Engelska)
Abstract [en]

Small and medium sized enterprises in the IT / consulting industry who rapidly have undergone significant growth often experience that the maintenance process of existing systems have become even more complex. A significant amount of resources destined for development are instead devoted to maintenance in order to meet this increasing complexity. Lack of standardized maintenance management, and that the organization’s employees usually have multiple tasks hampers clarification of the perceived resource loss. The purpose of the study is to identify this type of organization’s requirements on systems intended for maintenance and define the difficulties that this type of organization experience in maintenance management. The purpose is also to create an understanding of DevOps, which intends to, among other things, raise operational issues when applied early in the development process. The main purpose of this early focus on operational issues is to reduce the distance between developers (dev) and operators (ops). Finally, the aim of this study is to investigate which timesaving effects DevOps can have in small and medium sized companies where employees often have multiple roles, but where the problem is perceived similar to the problems DevOps claims to solve. The study’s empirical data is collected through a case study containing semistructured interviews, various types of observations, and development of a maintenance system. The maintenance system was developed partly to answer the study’s questions, and partly to improve the company’s maintenance of existing systems. The study’s result was provided through a qualitative and quantitative analysis in which the study’s empirical data met existing theory. As a result, the purpose of this study can be considered fulfilled. The study’s artifact, the maintenance system, was deployed in a production environment, and handed over to the company, which today uses and continuously improves on the system. The study clearly shows the potential for improvements in terms of handling the maintenance of existing systems in small and medium sized organization in the IT / consulting industry. Among the requirements that this type of company has on systems designed for maintenance are standardization, centralization, automation and security perceived as being the most important. The study also shows that the difficulties this type of organization experience in maintenance management clearly coincide with DevOps. The study is not carried out implementing a full version of DevOps in the company. The research result demonstrates nonetheless that an implementation of DevOps can lead to a more effective management of maintenance and that DevOps is suitable even in organizations where employees have multiple roles.
