Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to review leadership in the elderly care and to examine factors that are important for achieving good leadership as a first line manager in the care of the elderly. The study was conducted using a qualitative method and the empirical data were obtained using eight semi-structured interviews. The respondents are four first line managers and four employees within elderly care, all of them work in a municipality in western Sweden. The collected data material has been analyzed using thematic analysis. Important themes that have been analyzed to achieve good leadership in elderly care are professionalismpresence and clarity.

The study's empiricism has been linked to previous research in the field as well as a structural organizational perspective that includes structural dilemmas and monocratic bureaucracy.

A general conclusion we reached in our study based on respondents' stories, are respect, support and clarity have been interpreted as the most important factors for a good leadership of a first line manager within elderly care.
