P3 - Left-wing rubbish? : A qualitative study of bias in party leader-interviews in "Morgonpasset i P3" (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to see if it is possible to identify bias in the questions asked by the anchors of the show “Morgonpasset i P3”. The study includes one segment of the show where three of the party leaders in Sweden are being questioned. The three episodes where broadcasted in 2018. Public service in Sweden is considered to be left-wing on the political scale, despite the requirement of being unbiased. There are previous studies regarding unbiased news journalism, although there is less research on political interviews on radio. This study aims to fill this scientific gap. The study includes interviews with three party leaders in Sweden. The three interviews are; the party leader of the Swedish Democrats, the party leader of the Liberals and the party leader of The Left Party. The interviews are analyzed using the theoretical framework that consists of, critical discourse analysis, conversation analysis, theories about power and framing theory. The analytical tools that are used in the study are lexical choices, interruptions and master suppression techniques. Using the theoretical framework and analytical tools of the study we have identified differences in how the party leaders are being questioned. However, it is not possible to see if there is any political party that is consistently being favored or disadvantaged. They are being favored or disadvantaged to the same extent but in different contexts. However, based on the results of the study it is possible to detect trends that show that historically rooted “left-wing questions” are more prominent than “right-wing questions” in the interviews, but because there are some exceptions to the objective journalistic ideal in terms of people’s equal value, democracy and tolerance the anchors are not bias in their questioning of the party leaders.
