Proposals for a standard operation procedure for material deliveries for a safer construction site (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of the work is to investigate the major problems encountered in material deliveries in Swedish construction sites. After the problems have been identified, a proposal for an improved approach should be developed, a so-called standard routine (SOP). The goal is to reduce accidents and incidents in material deliveries using a standardized approach. Method: The methods used to answer the questions are semi-structured qualitative interviews that are open questions where respondents themselves have the opportunity to highlight the problems that exist. The interviews are designed using the funnel model. Information gathering was also made using surveys to increase the reliability of the empirical gathering. The method of design science research, which is a method of developing working methods, was used to develop a standardized routine (SOP). Findings: On the question, what was felt to be the most prevalent problem in material supplies, there were two prominent answers. A constant recurring issue was foreign suppliers who could not communicate in Swedish as well as the need for a responsible coordinator in place. Question number two resulted in a standardized method of delivery for material deliveries. This procedure can be found in Chapter 5. Implications: Interviews should have taken place at several different geographic locations in the country as there is a risk that the main problems differ between different locations in the country. This had given a broader and better understanding. Surveys should have been completed before the oral interviews. This in order to better understand the interviews using the collected empirical evidence from the surveys. Recommendations are to make more cycles in the Design science research process. This is to rework and adapt the SOP to the reality of the construction site. The amount of interviews should be expanded and international workforce should be interviewed. This was not done to reduce the scope of work. An uncertainty about the design of a standard routine is that the respondents with strong and dominant views influence the outcome to a greater extent. The standard routine that is produced is adapted to the reality of a construction site today. Limitations: The restrictions were made to look only at material supplies at the construction site. Persons interviewed were officials, occupational workers and subcontractors who visit the workplace temporarily and do not register in ID06. All those interviewed were Swedish speakers. The report consisted of 15hp, which corresponds to 10 week fulltime studies affecting the extent and amount of interviews that were done as well as the number of evaluation cycles in the design science research process.
