Abstract [en]

 

The purpose of this dissertation is to gain a deeper understanding of the effects network structures have on the actors that operate within them. This topic is of research significance, because little is known about network development within the removal industry.

The structure of the thesis is based upon Giddens’ (1984) structuration theory and will pursue and institutional analysis complemented by the netchain approach. The institutional analysis emphasizes the causal relationship between the institutions and the actors, while the netchain approach reveals the horizontal and vertical relationships with the institutions.

The research will be based upon a single case study of Kungsholms Express and Spedition. The study will highlight the development of the network structure and the consolidated logistics planning strategy.

The research findings were separated into four sections; network development, the planners’ perspective, consolidated logistics planning and centralized logistics planning. The network development was separated into the three ownership phases to emphasize the changes of the configuration of the network and its effect on the economic performance of Kungsholms. The netchain diagram was utilized to illustrate the network structure and the vertical and horizontal relationships. The planners’ perspective presented a portion of the research findings from the focus group session. The planners provided a great deal of insight into the challenges that the logistics planners face on a daily basis and effects of the corporate culture of their Scandinavian counterparts. The consolidated logistics planning section outlined the ‘KEX Consolidated Transport Strategy’ and the business processes that support it. Centralized logistics planning section outlined the three attempts to create the centralized logistics planning unit.

The research findings were analyzed according to the Giddens’ (1984) institutional analysis complemented by the netchain diagrams. The analysis has been segmented into three phases according to ownership period. The analysis focused on the attempt to development of a centralized logistics planning unit during each of the ownership phase.

The research has contributed to valuable insight into the removal industry, which has been neglected in academic research.
