Abstract [en]

Abstract

Introduction: This study explores historical and contemporary discriminations against queer individuals, investigating how these challenges hinder meaningful engagement in daily life and access to vital resources. Focused on the multifaceted experiences of the LGBTQI+ community, the research centers on occupational injustices. Through a critical lens, the study examines the potential application of feminist critical theory in occupational therapy practice for queer individuals.

Aim: The purpose of this study is to illuminate the occupational experiences of queer individuals in everyday life.

Method: A scoping review with searches on academic data bases and the analysis of ten identified articles. Data was charted, coded, and summarized, while the sixth stage of consulting was conducted regarding three stakeholders with different background.

Results: Queer individuals face adversity in education, healthcare, support service access, and spiritual practices, particularly during identity disclosure. Feminist theory guides occupational therapy practitioners in advocating and educating, creating safe, inclusive spaces. This integration addresses challenges across various occupations, fostering supportive environments within the professional realm.

Conclusions: Limited understanding persists about LGBTQI+ experiences. Occupational therapy theory emphasizes inclusivity for meaningful daily life engagement. Feminist theory provides theoretical and practical foundations, expanding occupational therapy's scope by fostering inclusion.

Significance: Create inclusive occupational therapy theory and practices where queer individuals are included and can disclose their true identities without the fear of discrimination and marginalizing.
