Standardization of low processed materials : Today’s obstacles and how to overcome them (Engelska)
Abstract [en]

Introduction (and aim) – This report is based on the consequences of the construction industry's global environmental impact. It analyzes the possibility of substituting today's highly processed materials for traditional (low processed) Swedish materials such as clay and timber. Highly processed materials examined in the report have been limited to steel and concrete. The purpose of the report is to favor future decisions to use sustainable low processed materials in the planning and design phase from a sustainable point of view. As well as highlighting the advantages of choosing sustainable traditional materials and their use in the construction industry.

Method – The method used in the study is qualitative interviews that are structured in a semi-structured way. To supplement the interviews, a literature study is done to help answer the questions. Those who have participated in the study are sustainability specialists, CEOs of architectural offices, BIM-strategists, and architects.

Results – The interviews and its respondents gave the report relevant points of view, opinions, and experiences. The respondents were selected with different backgrounds and titles to reach different fields and experiences. The interview questions were formulated with a clear connection to the report's issues and goals. As a result, the interview answers were direct answers to the report's questions and linked to the right context.

Analysis – All respondents point out the advantages from a sustainability perspective of working with low processed materials. The advantages of utilizing Sweden's assets and reducing transport distances are mentioned. However, one mentions a challenge with the implementation of the traditional materials and that is warranty and material characteristics. Traditional materials have, to date, no EPDs and therefore no guarantees or companies behind the materials. Most respondents also mention the lack of knowledge when it comes to building more traditionally. All respondents are also of the opinion that complete substitution may be possible, but not necessary.

Discussion – The report's method, goals and boundaries generate a clear result that answers the questions. The result is also linked to the literature studies found under the theoretical section.
