Castability and Thermophysical Properties of Aluminum Matrix Composites with Varying SiCp Additions

Abstract [en]

The present study investigates the castability and thermophysical properties of aluminum Metal Matrix Composite (Al-MMC) reinforced with varying silicon carbide particle (SiCp) contents. The composite materials with increasing fractions of SiCp from 10 to 30 wt.% were produced by casting to implement the measured data as input for the material database of the casting simulation of a brake rotor. In this regard, material properties like thermal diffusivity, thermal expansion, and specific heat capacity were evaluated for the investigated materials. In addition, the data of specific heat capacity, density, and thermal conductivity as a function of temperature accompanied by thermal arrest points captured by computer-aided cooling curves (CACC) were imported into the simulation software to create a new dataset for Al-MMC/SiCp with varying compositions. The improvement of the new simulation using the adapted material database in filling, solidification, and defect prediction was validated by microstructure analysis and comparison between the previous and the new simulation version.
