Abstract [en]
Background Participating in social events with family can provide enjoyment and quality time together as a family. However, families of children with autism spectrum disorder may experience this phenomenon differently or less satisfied, especially mothers of these children who are the primary carers may compromise their own participation in social events when accompanied by their children with Autism spectrum disorder.
Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore available literature to describe how mothers experience participation in social events like family weddings, birthday parties and celebrations with their children with Autism spectrum disorder.
Method A scoping review methodology was used to identify studies exploring mothers' experiences on family social events. A thematic synthesis was performed to analyse and synthesis the findings.
Findings A total of 8 articles were included for review. One central theme and four analytical themes emerged from the included studies: Negative experiences despite strategies as a central theme. Avoiding family social events, feeling fear, stress and anxiety, enjoying less and becoming less confident and Using strategies as analytical themes.
Discussion The findings indicate that mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder find it difficult being in family social events and undergo negative experiences during family social events that limit their participation in family social events despite using strategies.
