Abstract [en]

Introduction: The European League Against Rheumatism promotes a shared-decision process between patients and health-care providers in rheumatology. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMS) are an easy and fast client-centred approach for occupational therapists. The aim of this scoping review is to give an overview of available PROMs and their use in occupational therapy (OT) in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Method: This scoping review followed an established five-step approach by Arksey and O’Malley informed by updates on the methodology in conducting scoping reviews. The search was performed in six databases aiming for publications between 2010 and 2020. As a framework of reference, the Participants-Concept-Context was used to guide the search process and results were attributed to components within the “Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance-model” (PEOP).

Results: Fourteen papers met inclusion criteria and were included in this scoping review. Overall, thirty-nine PROMs were identified and successfully matched with domains of the PEOP. Most of the found PROMs were attributable to the component ‘Person’.

Conclusion: There is a wide variety of used patient-reported outcome measures available. The use of occupational performance measures in addition to core-outcomes in RA would satisfy occupational therapy core principles as well as rheumatologic guidelines. Further studies are needed to develop an up-to-date core-set of PROMs for OT in the treatment of RA.
