Abstract [en]

Background: New market needs lead to a transformation where the popularity of online shopping and click and collect service increasing. This change has consequences where one of them is the increased workload for the pickers who pick customers products. It can cause musculoskeletal disorder if this occur during a longer time which can lead to lifelong injuries. Because of that, the companies need to prioritize ergonomics solutions. Moreover, it has been showed that improved ergonomics at workplaces also can lead to higher efficiency and profit. Purpose: With the rapid development of internet, online shopping has also become a popular shopping method among customers, and more and more companies have begun to transform into online sales platforms and offer a picking service both online and in stores. This brings a lot of picking orders to the company but also more workload and health risks to the employees. Therefore, many companies are investing time and money to find a more efficient and safe picking process. The purpose of this study is to analyse how companies manage transformation and change of their picking process, from an ergonomics perspective. Method: A qualitative research with multiple methods was used to answer our research question. 16 hour of participatory observation and four semi-structured interviews were collected at the case company. The observations took place at meetings with the project group which aim to improve the ergonomics solutions during the picking process. The collected data was finally analyzed with grounded analysis where codes was divided categorizes which led to themes and created a new theory. Conclusion: The most important aspects when improving the ergonomics during picking, is to do proper research where the scope and objective are defined and gather right people, to have a strong people culture and values within the organization and finally to create knowledge throughout the organization. This turned out to be the main factors for success with change management when improving ergonomics during the picking process.
