Abstract [en]

Using an ordinary least square regression, this paper evaluates some of the determining factors of the Swedish retail diversity. Particular emphasis has been put on the relation between a municipality size as an effect for diversity of the retailing industry. With the research question: “Does the size of municipalities in Sweden impact the diversity in the supply of retailing?” The analyzed dataset is compiled of all of the 289 Swedish municipalities during a seven year period, from 2004 to 2010. The dataset has also been divided up into Urban and Rural to look further into the relationship. Results show that larger locations do offer wider and more diverse retailing as well as prove the importance of other factors, such as industry well-being and productivity, employment in the sector, and “municipality dynamics”, such as the resident to non-resident ratio, population concentration and, perhaps the most intuitive factor, purchasing power – average wage.
