Journalistic role performance on TikTok: A content analysis study on NOS Stories’ TikTok account
2022 (engelsk)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
Abstract [en]

This thesis is about journalistic role performance on the social media platform TikTok. By means of a content analysis, the study seeks to find an answer to the question of which one of the six dimensions of journalistic role performance (Mellado, 2015) is prominent for NOS Stories on TikTok. In total, a sample of 40 videos has been analysed. The outcome of the study is that the dimension civic is the most prominent on NOS Stories’ TikTok feed. Which means that the news organization values civic journalism. The thesis also provides an extensive literature review on social media in general, social media addiction, power relations in social media, the attention economy, social media platform TikTok, and journalism on social media. Theories that have been touched upon are social media logic, news ethics and values, and the different roles of journalism in society. This study opens up doors to multiple follow-up studies to get a deeper look into news media operating on social media.
