Abstract [en]

Cast Iron alloys represent one of the most used engineering materials on the world. Itsversatility makes it suitable for a large number of list of applications. Among them, engineblocks, brake discs, gear, camshafts, matrices, rolling cylinders, among other componentsfor the automotive industry.

The microstructure formation during solidification process of components has crucialimportance on the mechanical properties. Nodular graphite provides better mechanicalproperties given the name of ductile cast iron. However, lamellar graphite shows theopposite behavior, but in its place shows better thermal conductivity. Therefore, it isdecisive to develop reproducible techniques on which all the parameters of thesolidification are entirely understood to obtain the desired features for the parts.

The objective of this thesis is to increase the knowledge of the influence of the nodularityon the mechanical properties with the variation of the nodularity, covering the wholeinterval between SGI and LGI.

During this thesis work, the initial Mg content of a base hypoeutectic SGI has beencontrolled to produce different graphite morphologies. Samples with different graphitemorphologies ranging from SGI to LGI were tested by tensile test to obtain the ultimatetensile strength (UTS) and strain (ε).

The results obtained show that the mechanical properties vary with the graphitemorphology. The higher transition between properties has occurred between LGI and CGI,whereas the increase of mechanical properties between CGI and SGI have shown a lowergrowth with the nodularity.
