The story about a ”misfortune” : A micro historic study of Astrid Lindgren in relation to adulterous sexuality in Sweden during the first decades of the 1900s century (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to describe how Astrid Lindgrens actions, in relation to her entourage, her relationship and her first childbirth, were based on the view of adulterous sexuality during the beginning of the 1900s century. The study is grounded on a micro historic study which is based on preserved letters, notes and court protocols from Sevede District Court in Vimmerby. Through the processing of this material, Astrid's actions are analyzed both through an individual perspective and a structural perspective. The micro historic method of the study is combined with a gender-theoretical approach to create an understanding of the individual's role in an overall social process. The relationship between the micro historic method and the gender- theoretical point of view creates a methodological and theoretical relationship, which in this study serves as a basis for the description and analysis of Astrid's relation to adulterous sexual structures. Based on the outcome, Astrid works as an example of the vulnerability, oppression, and shame that women had to answer for if they had sexual relations outside the borders of marriage. One of the conclusions that can be drawn from the analysis is that Astrids actions were influenced by the basis of current views on adulterous sexuality but can also be seen as a component of the changing process that began in the 1920s in the area of adulterous sexuality, especially directed to woman. The result of the study also shows that previous government- regulated areas still can survive and live as social laws in terms of norms and values, which affected the actions of Astrid when she was carrying her first child together with prevalent gender structures during the 1920s which regulated the areas of responsibilities attributed to men and woman. The social, economical and mental consequences unmarried mothers had to go through in relation to unmarried fathers sexual relations seen as a non-moral crime, tended to leave women with no other choice than to give their babies up for adoption. To put your first child up for adoption, based on the facts that it would create better prospects for both yourself and the future child, is something that Astrid together with many other woman had to go through, and live with, for the rest of their lives.
