Abstract [en]

Background: A multidisciplinary approach is needed in child welfare regarding clients’ needs and problems – occupational therapy is a rehabilitation form that offers client-centred solutions to clients. Occupational therapy in child welfare hasn’t been much studied although there is evidence found of occupational therapy regarding client groups met in child welfare. Aim: The purpose of this study is to describe the content of occupational therapy services and expertise of occupational therapists in child welfare services in Finland as well as to examine the possible benefits of occupational therapists’ work. Material and Methods: The research followed a qualitative procedure. Two child welfare units participated in this study and the sample was recruited by using purposive sampling. The interview questions were designed in accordance with the purpose of this study. A qualitative content analysis was done to the data gathered from the interviews. Results: Occupational therapists have skills and tools to assess the clients’ situation in a profound way that helps to understand the clients’ complexities better. Conclusions: The occupational therapist’s perspective in child welfare services is important and needed. Significance: Occupational therapists are a new profession in social services. The results of this study are significant when discussing the role of occupational therapy in service network.
