Abstract [en]

In Sweden, eligibility to move to an assisted living facility is usually based on individual needs assessment. Since 2012, a new addition to the Social Services Act makes it possible for needs-assessed older people to live with their spouse in the facility, regardless if the accompanying spouse is relatively healthy and does need the social- and nursing care provided there.  In this presentation, two contrasting case studies of cohabiting couples will be presented. These case studies are based on qualitative interviews with couples and staff in two assisted living facilities in two different Swedish municipalities. Local municipal guidelines establishing who has the right to help and care trickle down in the ways both the staff and couple talk about the spouse’s rights and roles in the facility. In the two cases, there were also different staff attitudes about the spouses’ need for support in their role as spousal caregiver within the facility.
