In a globalized world, understanding different backgrounds and cultural history is becoming increasingly important. This understanding can promote tolerance and enrich individual and collective identity. Therefore, the context and living conditions of two different generations in Sweden are described. One cohort is born in 1925, and the other is born in 1985. This article compares the impact of the pandemic on mental health and well-being on these two generations. Loneliness is a complex and pervasive issue that affects individuals across all demographics. It is characterized by a subjective feeling of isolation or lack of companionship, which can significantly impact mental and physical health. A model of social capital as a part of well-being is presented to underline the importance of social relationships as a part of intergenerational relationships. The question is as follows: What are the effects of the pandemic situation on these two generations?

Abstract [en]

In intergenerational projects, learning a craft is an activity that may be of interest to people of different ages. This paper focuses on knitting as a craft. In most Western societies, knitting is often considered a craft for women, but on Taquile Island, Peru, it is the men who knit. This paper discusses knitting from an intergenerational perspective whilst focusing on gender and culture. To this aim, we introduce an intrinsic case study to examine the role of gender and culture in intergenerational learning. The data used in this study was collected during a visit to Taquile Island. In summary, the study’s findings reveal that (i) on Taquile, members of the community invest in maintaining cultural traditions in opposition to being swept along by (con)temporary social changes; (ii) knitting on Taquile is approached as a practical technique in contrast to Western culture where knitting is connected to the concept of ‘well-being’; and (iii) whilst gender structures may set frames for performance, the Taquile case demonstrates that what is typically considered ‘male’ or ‘female’ may vary.

Idag är stickning inte enbart ett sätt att skapa kläder på ett mer miljövänligt och hållbart sätt, enligt forskning så kan det även påverka ditt allmänna välbefinnande.

– Man behöver inte ta några lugnande tabletter utan man kan sätta sig med sin stickning i lugn och ro och glömma alla sina bekymmer, säger Ann-Kristin Boström, docent inom internationell pedagogik på Jönköpings universitet.

Hon har forskat om stickning kopplat till välbefinnande och även skrivit en bok om ämnet. I forskningen har hon kom fram till att det är en hobby som kan ha stora fördelar för den mentala hälsan.

I videon förklarar experten Ann-Kristin Boström några fördelar med stickning.

I boken Varför stickar du? beskriver Ann-Kristin Boström sin forskning om stickning i stickcirklar och stickkaféer, och hur stickande personer förhåller sig till sitt intresse. Det som framkommer är att stickningen är något att längta till. Nästan alla som svarat använder stickningen för att minska sin oro, åtminstone ibland, och de glömmer ofta sina bekymmer när de stickar. Den typiska stickaren har oftast med sig en stickning i väskan, och har flera stickprojekt på gång samtidigt.

Abstract [en]

Many workplaces have a somewhat odd fixation on age and the segregation of different generations that occurs ('age segregation'), which often leads to the underutilisation of competence within organisations. The chapter reviews some common misunderstandings between different generations that impel cooperation. The review helps HR specialists to understand the importance of the dimension of age and may provide these specialists the necessary tools to overcome any obstacles or problems which may arise in connection with age differences. Again, this is done so that every person’s competence, irrespective of their age, can be used within the organisation.
