Abstract [pl]

Abstract [en]

Many recent publications hold a dark view of contemporary business administration and its context. The current state of capitalism and corporate management is described as zombie (Harman, 2009), ghostly(Roy, 2014) or, in the most benign appraisal, sick but not dying (Tomlinson, 2010).  At the same time, business schools, textbooks and popular management books remain wedded to a reductive view of social interactions, drawing inspiration as well as authority from a century of socioeconomic triumph as well as from the rigid definitions of management relations as handed down by the founding figures of the discipline. Drawing inspiration from Walter Benjamin’s (1969) refiguring of Charles Baudelaire’s flâneur, we revisit the haunted spaces of popular management books, using the situationist method of dérive to invoke the ghosts of foundational thinkers for  inspiration and, possibly, exorcism. The aim of this excursion is to propose strategies for communication about some old ideas of management which still can be regarded as vital, even though the contemporary forms may have become morbid (Fleming, 2017).

Abstract [en]

Purpose: The aim of this article is to fill the gap in the Polish discourse on management about the concept of dignity in the workplace. The text presents the issue from the perspective of humanistic management. The article analyzes contemporary discussion about dignity in the workplace conducted in the Western discourse on management.

Methodology: The reflections stem from a critical analysis of popular concepts of dignity in the workplace in the management discourse. The author also uses the existing results of empirical research. The analysis uses management literature on dignity, which is the basis for systematizing available concepts.

Findings: The literature analysis enables systematization of various concepts of dignity in the workplace and identification of specific levels in the quality of employee treatment in an organization. Hence, the author identifies a few key factors that affect employees’ dignity in the workplace both positively and negatively and indicates mechanisms that allow for the humanization of work processes.

Research limitations: The theoretical reflections should be verified by empirical research in organizations. However, the area of research on dignity in the workplace is not problematized enough, potential problems still require in-depth theoretical research.

Practical implications: The reflection on dignity in the workplace emphasizes the organizational mechanisms that lead to the humanization and dehumanization of work processes. The problematization of the category of dignity should allow researchers to conduct empirical research in organizations and managers to design organizational solutions that protect the well-being of their employees which, in consequence, may have a positive impact on the organization’s development.

Originality: The article discusses the concepts of dignity in the workplace which are absent in the Polish discourse of management and indicates directions of further research in the field.

Abstract [en]

Gazing at Raphael’s masterpiece The School of Athens, one is confronted with a range of characters epitomizing distinct branches of knowledge; you notice a spirit of theoretical exchange and intellectual pursuit imbuing the canvass. This has been a heritage universities across ages have been cherishing and considering to be a defining trait of their identity. Nowadays, such interactions are disappearing under the influence of the short-term demands of the societies and markets. The surrendering of universities to these demands turns them incapable of remaining critical or independent. Universities used to be sites of dissent, civil courage and societal conscience but have now instead become pseudo-businesses. And yet, there is a strong resistance to the notion that the university as a collegial and critical institution is dead, among academics as well as broader public. This book is a result of such conversations taking place in different places and among different people, going well beyond stating the facts or providing ready-made recipes. We hope it will generate momentum for further discussion on the future of university education, and, potentially, will become a small contribution towards change.
