Abstract [en]

Entrepreneurship education has witnessed a shift from teaching about entrepreneurship in different forms towards encouraging the action and activity-based training of students for entrepreneuring through business plan writing on fictitious or concrete ventures to enacting these ideas in real life. For example, Ollila and Williams-Middleton (2011) describe ways in which a venture creation approach allows students to “test the waters” while reflecting on real-life situations and while exploring entrepreneurial behaviours (see also Williams-Middleton & Donnellon, 2014). Though there has been a growing focus on simulating or experiencing entrepreneurial behaviours through entrepreneurship education, little space has been given to students’ reflexivity in positioning themselves as learning subjects beyond educational settings. Yet very often questions posed by our students in the classroom, for example when listening to entrepreneurs telling them about their venture journeys, start with a “why” statement, clearly expressing their desire to engage with reflexivity. Reflexivity is then not only understood as a kind of generalized self-awareness (Swan, 2008, p. 393) but also as a concern for the world at large (Swan, 2008, p. 394).

Abstract [en]

This article problematizes the delimitations of the Triple Helix approach concerning social aspects of innovation and entrepreneurship by acknowledging the engagement of a wider range of actors and sectors in such processes of change. Instead, the article explores the potential of the Quadruple Helix approach to help identify soci(et)al needs, envision inclusive social and economic renewal, and develop innovative measures for attaining those visions. As a response to the delimited focus of the Triple Helix, the Quadruple Helix adds civil sector actors to the already acknowledged private, public and academic sector actors. The article uses three case studies from Sweden and Mexico to demonstrate how a wider range of actors and sectors can be included in processes of soci(et)al innovation and entrepreneurship. The authors were involved in the cases in a dual role of activists and researchers in line with a participatory research approach. This results distinguish how the Quadruple Helix approach serves to facilitate socially inclusive regional development by enabling the involved actors to contribute to social innovation both as professionals and volunteers to initiate tailor-made solutions for social ventures, and universities to encourage scholars and students to intertwine theoretical development and soci(et)al change.

Abstract [en]

There is an increasing gap between the contemporary academic and political concern for social enterprising and available theoretical and empirical research in the field. This study makes a contribution by first outlining a conceptual framework for (social) entrepreneuring based on practice-theory. This frames an in-depth inquiry into the everyday operations of two work integrating Swedish social enterprises, inter-connected in an emerging franchise structure. Adopting an interactive research approach based on ‘indwelling’ basic structural and processual practices constituting social entrepreneuring are disclosed. Using a weaving metaphor the proposed three structural practices, presented as dualities, appear as the warp while the six processual practices that are identified make the weft. Major findings include the observation that entrepreneurial commitment and proposed practices dominate the formal franchisor-franchisee relation and that the potential for social-capital mobilization does not reduce the need for financial capital.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

There is an increasing gap between the contemporary academic and political concern for social enterprising and available theoretical and empirical research in the field. In this study we want to contribute to a much needed bridge by, first, outlining a conceptual framework for (social) entrepreneuring based on practice-theory. Second, we generate an in-depth inquiry into the everyday operations of two Swedish social businesses, interconnected in an emerging franchise structure, identifying basic structural and processual features of social entrepreneuring. The proposed structures include the dualities individual/collective as the actor, personal/institutional rules of action and self-identity/social identity. The six identified practices concern social bricolaging, amplified immediacy, dynamic involvement, ambiguous legitimacy, self-enforced heterogeneity and urgency for financial viability.

Abstract [en]

Departing from the standpoint that internationalisation needs to become a more explicit part of assessing the quality of academic activity (i.e., education, research, and (business) community interaction), we elaborate upon how the intercultural composition of a student cohort could be leveraged as a road to the advancement of entrepreneurship education at the graduate level. We argue that the very heterogeneity of the students with respect to their socio-cultural background and personal experiences offers a rich potential for mutual social learning that reinforces formal education activities. Creating awareness of this collective resource opens up for self-organising processes among the students as they craft an entrepreneurial identity which guides them in their learning throughout the master programme.
