    Abstract [en]

False alarms in home surveillance systems are an annoyance for customers and it has become a much-debated topic. There are several previous studies where the purpose is to reduce the number of false alarms in home surveillance systems, but not about combining different types of sensors in different sensitivities that complement each other. The purpose of the thesis is to combine three motion detectors; two passive infrared (PIR) sensors and a microwave sensor coupled to an Arduino Uno with different sensitivities and compare it with each individual motion detector with different sensitivities, to determine what gives the best results in detecting people for an indoor monitoring system. An experiment with these sensors has been carried out and the data from the sensors is trained in a machine learning function which then plotted a ROC graph with a curve summarizing the result.PIR-sensors are triggered by heat and detect human thermal energy. Combined with a microwave sensor that senses human movements, the number of false alarms was reduced with an area under curve (AUC) of up to 97% with the lowest sensitivity of the sensors. The method that has been used can be reused for further studies for tests with other sensors and combinations. The method selection with machine learning function that trains data from the sensors and draws out a ROC graph gave a very clear picture of how well that particular combination of sensors and sensitivity works. By interpreting the ROC curve, combining several sensors has shown to give better results. The PIR-sensor has shown to give a low false positive rate by reducing the number of false alarms when no person passes, the microwave sensor has shown to give a high true positive rate, by reducing the number of misses when a person passes. The combination of the sensors has led to the sensors complementing each other which reduced the number of false alarms.

Introverta och extroverta individers arbetstillfredsställelse på aktivitetsbaserade arbetsplatser: En kvalitativ fallstudie av två IT-företag2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Transformativt ledarskap & grupprestation: Medierande effekt av tillit till arbetsgruppen2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Enhetschefer utan gränser: En kvalitativ studie om hur digitala arbetsverktyg påverkar enhetschefers psykosociala arbetsmiljö inom vård och omsorg2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ledarskap och psykologiskt välmående i en barnrättsorganisation: En kvalitativ fallstudie2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Är onboarding nyckeln till arbetsmotivation?: En kvantitativ enkätstudie2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Businesses in Rwanda: Sustainable entrepreneurship, marketing and management for sustainability2017Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Cooperation between the Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) at Jönköping University and the College of Business and Economics (CBE) at the University of Rwanda started in 2014 as part of the UR-Sweden Programme of Research, Higher Education and Institutional Advancement. In 2016, a decision was taken to further improve the quality of teaching by developing new and contextualized teaching material. This task was undertaken in the frame of the cooperation by supporting CBE staff to write these cases studies under the guidance and mentorship of JIBS professors in general and Assistant Professor Jean-Charles E. Languilaire in particular. JIBS and CBE proudly present the first case studies in the frame of this cooperation. This book entitled ”Businesses in Rwanda: Sustainable Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Management for Sustainability” includes 8 cases about 5 different Rwandese businesses: BEMS Duhange Ltd., SOWATORM Ltd., NYINAWAJAMBO, INEMA Catering Services and the Gorillas Hotel Group.

This book presents five entrepreneurial journeys as well as the managerial and marketing struggles along these journeys. Specifically, the cases describe how entrepreneurs found or created a gap in the market and then developed and managed their organizations to enter such markets and took a place in them by gaining market shares and as a result to contribute to economical, environmental and social sustainability. This book presents sustainable entrepreneurship, sustainable management and sustainable marketing as cornerstones to sustainability in the context of Rwanda. Across the cases, students will have the occasion to increase their capacity to reflect on entrepreneurship, marketing and management and the relationships between them. These cases will enable students to develop a multifaceted mind-set for sustainability, to increase their capacity to create and develop new businesses, and to prepare themselves for their future roles as employees, managers and leaders in a sustainable world.

Exploring the Roles of Parents and Teachers for Intervention for Inclusive Education of Children in Need of Support in Low & Middle Income Countries of the Southern Region of Africa. A Systematic Literature Review from 2011-20202020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: In this paper, we examine the role of parents and teachers in inclusive education intervention programmes.  Developing countries mostly have inclusive education policies in place, but implementation in many of such nations remain a serious challenge. This implies that inclusive schools often require interventions

Aim: The aim of this study is to describe the role of teachers and parents in intervention programs targeted at improving developmental activities of children in need of support in inclusive schools in some low- and middle income countries of the southern part of Africa.

Method: A systematic review of literature was adopted. Four online databases were searched for relevant articles, using a number of pre-defined criteria. Useful data, related to the research questions were subsequently extracted from the studies

Results: Community-based rehabilitation, universal design learning, and professional development are some of the intervention types in use in the Southern part of Africa. Furthermore, teachers were observed to play the roles of education and clinical psychologists, while striving to develop relevant on-the-job skills. Parents, On the other hand, were mostly found to contribute financially to smooth running of poorly-equipped inclusive schools. Although child development was not outrightly described in the reviewed articles, it mostly served as the basis for intervention

Conclusion: This study observed that the role of teachers and parents in intervention programs will be more effective, when child developmental facilitators e.g. linking intervention to UN children convention, are boosted in schools within the Southern region of Africa.

Play therapy interventions promoting intrinsic characteristics of resilience.: A systematic literature review.2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Challenges like adversity and traumatic experiences can be especially stressful for children since they may not have fully developed certain skills and are often dependent on the support and guidance of adults. The medium of play is a powerful tool and can be used to enhance children to meet challenges better. It is mostly their preferred medium of interaction and allows them to process experiences playfully. The aim of this systematic literature review was to examine existing play therapy interventions that promote intrinsic characteristics of resilience in children. A search for scholarly articles has been carried out in 7 databases, resulting in ten articles included in the analysis. Play therapy interventions explicitly targeting resilience could not be found, as well as play therapy interventions targeting problem-solving abilities and adaptability of children. Interventions that targeted intrinsic characteristics of resilience were Child-Centered-Play-Therapy, Sandplay therapy, and Theraplay. The play therapy interventions were mostly effective but varied in their effect sizes. Results indicate that children with disabilities need a more directed form of play therapy. The field of play therapy interventions supporting explicitly intrinsic characteristics of resilience is a multi-factorial, dynamic, and complex construct that stands in its beginnings of research. Limitations of the study and further research are discussed.

Svaga och hjälplösa kvinnor i Huryle: En kvalitativ studie om framställningen av kvinnor i spelserien The Legend of Zelda2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Even tough the game industry is one of the fastest growing markets it´s still critized for being sexist and dominated by men. Previous research, about gender in video games, has shown that a majority of game developers are men, and due to that alot of the games are created to please men. Research also show that women are rarely portrayed and in the instances they are, they are often described as helpless and weak. The studys prior to this one are focused on games that are marketed for an adult audience but very few enlighten gender in games made for children. Therefor this study are focused on the portraying of women in the video games series, The Legend of Zelda, wich is a game targeted to children. With the use of a semiotic method women in the game serie have been looked upon, to answer the question with the help of various gender theorys. This study also tries to answer if the portraitation has change over a time period. The study shows that the game serie almost every time portray women, and their bodies, in a stereotypical way. The analysis also show that the games are made for a male audience, and therefor falls into the theory of The male gaze. Furthermore the portrating of women has changed over time but it´s still a long way to go until the stereotyped woman is no longer a part of The Legend of Zelda.

Craft production in the Kingdom of Crystal (Glasriket) and its visual representation: Constructing authenticity in cultural/marketing production2020Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Authenticity is a core concept and phenomenon in contemporary marketing, as both marketers and consumers seek the authentic. Individuals, companies, and industries all work to establish and accomplish authenticity for themselves and related stakeholders. As a marketing point for creating differentiation and singularity, authenticity has the potential to augment the value of a product above and beyond its promising functional, esthetic, or experiential significance. However, authenticity is a concept with heavily debated characteristics, and it is not well understood in its market manifestations. Academic work on authenticity remains vague in terms of both its definition and its marketing relevance. There has been limited empirical understanding of and theorizing about what is meant by authenticity and how it is manifested in production and consumption in the marketplace. In practice, the nature and use of authenticity in the field of marketing is still full of ambiguity and confusion. For marketers, brand authenticity is easy to recognize but hard to manufacture. How producers and marketers manage the development, positioning, and communication of authentic offerings and how they engineer, fabricate, or construct authenticity remain unanswered questions.

This dissertation answers the call of Jones, Anand, and Alvarez (2005, p. 894) to determine which strategies are used for creating and defining authenticity and how these strategies shape our understanding of what is authentic and the call of Beverland (2005a) to find out how brands and marketers create and develop images of authenticity. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate how authenticity of market offerings is constructed in two cultural/marketing production sites—the craft production of glass objects and commercial photographers’ image production as visual representation of the former—to understand the mechanisms behind the authentication of market offerings and the paradoxes within the construction work.

This purpose was fulfilled by pairing the two theoretical domains of cultural/marketing production and authenticity for the investigation of an empirical site—the Kingdom of Crystal (“Glasriket” in Swedish)—located in southern Sweden. As a traditional craft-producing industrial region and a tourist destination, the site has been dedicated to making consumer glass products, maintaining its production mode and ethos as a handmade craft, for more than one hundred years. Being producer focused, the craft sector and craft production offer a strong empirical instantiation of authenticity and can serve as a fertile field to explore and problematize the issue of authenticity at the intersection with cultural/marketing production. The research was conducted over a three-year period with an interpretive and ethnographic approach tapping into multiple sources of data.

This dissertation finds that the glass producers in Glasriket substantively construct five categories of authenticity (technique, material, geographical, temporal, and original) of market offerings via craft production and that commercial photographers communicate and authenticate the craft production world via their image-making practices, which are dimensionalized into a typology consisting of five categories of practice: reproducing, documenting, participating, estheticizing, and indexing. Illuminating the two-step micro process of cultural/marketing production—the concurrent practices of the product makers and the promoters, this dissertation theorizes about how authenticity operates vis-à-vis two types of production (substantive product making and communicative image making), yielding a number of contributions to authenticity scholarship and the literature on cultural/marketing production. It provides managerial implications for marketers/producers in Glasriket regarding how they can leverage cultural resources to conduct retro marketing as well as suggestions for marketers beyond this context about visual marketing and authenticity-based marketing.

The challenges of continuity in family businesses in Rwanda2020Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Focusing on a developing country, this study investigates how an owning family builds its business’ continuity. While scholars of family businesses tend to depict the continuity of a family firm in terms of family succession, preserving the family legacy, or the firm’s longevity, in the social context of a developing country that is dominated by instability and hostility, family firms are subject to day-by-day survival risks. My approach is viewing family businesses’ continuity as day-by-day survival for the sake of ensuring the long-term orientation of the family businesses in the context of a developing country. The family is situated in a broader social context, and therefore the business is embedded in the family’s social networks that cannot be detached from the country’s social context. The developing country context is important because of its culture, politics, and history that differ from a developed world.

In this thesis, the continuity of family businesses is understood as: (1) sustaining the family’s legacy coming of the founder’s achievements, (2) succession, sustaining the business beyond the founder’s tenure, and ensuring that both the family and business stay together, and (3) longevity, ensuring a long-term orientation which is a crucial characteristic of all family businesses. This last category is relevant to this thesis because long-term orientation is achieved through futurity, persistence, and continuity patterns. This thesis focuses on continuity as daily and short-term survival to ensure the long-term orientation of a family business. Different theoretical lenses including portfolio literature, socialization literature, and commitment literature were tried for in this thesis. Commitment literature was found binding both portfolio and socialization literature. And therefore, commitment literature was considered reliable for understanding the challenges of family businesses’ continuity. Using commitment literature, this study uses data collected from founder-led business families in Rwanda and investigates how the commitments of actors at multiple levels affects the day-by-day survival of family businesses.

The thesis follows a qualitative approach with multiple cases of research design. It uses data from six founder-led business families in Rwanda. It follows the interview approach and uses the INVIVO program to code the transcribed data. The phenomenon of how the family built its business’ continuity is investigated following a multi-level analysis, that is, how each level affected the continuity of the family business or individual, family, and business levels in a business family. The individual level has founders, next generation members, women, in-laws, and non-family employees (Sharma, 2004). It uses the grounded theory for elaborating on matters arising when investigating the continuity of family businesses (see Figure 6.1). A family business’ continuity model is built to map ‘how’ a family builds its business continuity as well as ‘what’ is the expected role played by each level (see Figure 7.1), and a day-by-day continuity model of the family business is crafted to understand the mechanisms behind its day-by-day continuity (see Figure 7.2).

The findings of this thesis show clearly that family businesses in Rwanda are focused on preserving their firms for retaining the family legacy, but unfortunately, they are unable to plan for a long-term legacy. I posit that short-term survival, repeatedly, will lead to long-term survival and, subsequently, to longevity. The findings highlight the role of the specific context and associated cultural aspects of continuity in family businesses. The three aggregate dimensions developed present three main challenges to the continuity of family businesses in Rwanda. First, due to Rwandan cultural obligations of inheritance by the next generation, both the founding generation and the next generations are committed to family businesses’ continuity. Unfortunately, there is a detachment among generations in Rwanda, which is contrary to the cooperation expected in family businesses. Second, the uncertainties and inertia resulting from the absence of co-ownership and the inter-generational distance due to cultural aspects lead to separate and parallel planning for businesses’ continuity. Third, when it comes to the involvement in the management of family businesses, inter-generational conflicts and uncertainties result in weak family embeddedness that may push some family members away from the family businesses. This situation is a challenge because the absence of co-management between the incumbents and the next generation is abnormal since both parties, like dancing partners, need to manage the transition.

Ignoring the three challenges that they face, business families in Rwanda strive for continuity through (1) created and protected family legacy, (2) created inner cohesion among the next generation’s members, (3) in-laws and non-family members assimilated into the family business, (4) the family forming norms for succession, governance, and order-conflict processes, and (5) the family business’ resilience maintained for the family and community. Missing this mindset of planning for the long-term explains why many business families in Rwanda fail to continue after the founder’s tenure. There are many reasons for not planning for the long-term. In this thesis, the factors in a family business’ continuity are linked to (a) the family setting and the social capital of both direct and invisible members that ensures on-going activities of the family business; (b) the cultural setting related to inheritance management, heirship/legal ownership succession, family chieftaincy retention, and leadership succession, and (c) the institutional uncertainty and Ubuntu or a communitarianist nature of family firms as a way of living in a developing country making it difficult to plan for the long term.

This study contributes to an understanding of the heterogeneity of contexts in family business research. It will also assist owners and practitioners operating in changing environments to design informed continuity plans that have the potential to ensure the survival of family businesses in Rwanda. Theoretically, the study concludes that a commitment to continuing family businesses is shared by different levels in business families, but each level has one primary form of commitment and many forms of secondary commitment for the continuity of family businesses. There is a fluidity in commitment among multiple levels in business families.

    Abstract [en]

For several centuries, there has been a process where people's duty to work has been replaced by a demand for balance, meaning and quality for the individual at work. This change has motivated organizations to develop their employer brand, since "strong brands gain their power from within" (Parment, Dyhre & Lutz, 2017, p. 28) which requires a consistent organizational identity that is based on shared values and communication strategies (Parment, Dyhre & Lutz, 2017, p. 13–30).

Values as a means of management mean that the organization leads itself with a selected value base to achieve set goals and create a desirable corporate culture. Previous research has shown that employees who enjoy and feel proud of their workplace are a more important factor for employee motivation than financial benefits (Philipson, 2004, p. 56–58). Employees who thrive and live the culture are an important strategic tool for anchoring the culture within the organization (Falkheimer & Heide, 2007, p. 90-91). Both communication and value management can help organizations, if used properly. We chose to conduct a case study on a Swedish state-owned organization, which will be anonymous in this study. A content analysis on collected empirical data from observations, interviews and surveys was conducted to study internal communication through various communication channels, to see if the employees perceive the values as genuine and therefor if the values are used as a means of management.

The conclusion shows that the organization does not fully use value words as an instrument of management, but that the value words affect the interpersonal internal behaviour. The communication channels are used in parallel to maximize the effect of communication but since decisions are made within the organization that contradicts the values, the culture is not perceived as genuine and therefore does not function fully as a means of management, which it has the opportunity to be.

    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, many older adults receive care in their own homes. However, their perceptions of the experience of receiving home care has not been sufficiently examined. This study aimed to explore older adults' experiences of receiving care and services in their homes and their perceptions of the care that they had received. In-depth interviews were conducted with 29 older adults. There were individual differences in their level of participation, but they mostly perceived their participation in the planning and provision of home care to be limited. Furthermore, their needs (and wishes), especially those that pertained to different aspects of time, were not always gratified. Organizational factors and care providers' lack of competence and high levels of time pressure influenced their perceptions of care. It is important to consider the perspectives of older care recipients when developing home care.

An analysis of the Swedish web accessibility law through two public sector websites: A comparative study on the Student Financial Aid,and the Public Employment Service.2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate how well the law on accessibility is implemented, to find what implications there might be when accessing a website, and to find out how well a website needs to be adapted for it to be accessible.

    Method

The researchers made a comparative study between the Swedish public sector desktop websites, the Student Financial Aid and the Public Employment Service. The method used was a combination of automatic and manual evaluation of the accessibility on the websites. In the Automatic Evaluation the free tool A-checker, and a color contrast tool was used to check the code from the WCAG framework 2.0 AA. In the manual evaluation the researchers conducted a heuristic evaluation based on the WCAG’s checklist, a survey with 60 participants, and user tests with 5 participants using assistive technologies such as only using the keyboard, resizing the text and disabling the CSS sheet. The tests provided an input on how the websites can be accessed with assistive technologies and what improvements could be made.

    Findings

This research found by conducting a survey, that 43.3% were not aware of the accessibility law, and that 58.3% were not aware that they can complain to the supervisor authority if a website is not accessible. Because of the lack of knowledge, this might make it harder for companies to adapt their websites to be accessible.

Further, the researchers found that since A-checker uses WCAG’s framework, it takes time to interpret what the recommendations actually mean. The other automated tool, the colour contrast tool was easy to interpret for the researchers, and the checklist from WCAG helped as a guide, even though the checklist was more time consuming.

    Implications

The researchers were not able to find any participants with any of the disabilities which the thesis focuses on.

    Limitations

In order to test the websites, the participants were using assistive technologies.

The researchers could not get access to a screen reader, therefore the user tests were conducted by disabling the CSS sheet. In the survey, not enough participants with disabilities answered, therefore some of the results were discluded from the study.

Preparing construction supply chains for blockchain technology: An investigation of its potential and future directions2020In: Frontiers of Engineering Management, ISSN 2096-0255Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Blockchain, a peer-to-peer, controlled, distributed database structure, has the potential to profoundly affect current business transactions in the construction industry through smart contracts, cryptocurrencies, and reliable asset tracking. The construction industry is often criticized for being slow in embracing emerging technologies and not effectively diffusing them through its supply chains. Often, the extensive fragmentation, traditional procurement structures, destructive competition, lack of collaboration and transparency, low-profit margins, and human resources are shown as the main culprits for this. As blockchain technology makes its presence felt strongly in many other industries like finance and banking, this study investigates the preparation of construction supply chains for blockchain technology through an explorative analysis. Empirical data for the study were collected through semi-structured interviews with 17 subject experts. Alongside presenting a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis (SWOT), the study exhibits the requirements for and steps toward a construction supply structure facilitated by blockchain technology.

Community and School Based Mental Health Interventions for Refugee Children and Adolescents: A 2010-2020 Systematic Literature Review2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Traumatic experiences before, during but also after refugee children’s and adolescents’ displacement impose harmful mental health symptoms like post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety. Nevertheless, such threats can be addressed since mental health interventions have been found not only effective but are seen as a legal and ethical obligation.

Aim: This study’s aim was to systematically investigate and present available school and community based mental health interventions for refugee children and adolescents from 2010-2020 and to report on their outcome. This systematic review was conducted in order to address certain gaps in literature about contemporary mental health interventions for refugee children and adolescents.

Method: Specific search terms were used in three scientific online databases (EBSCO-ERIC, PsycINFO and Scopus) and for a manual searching. Six prime studies emerged through title, abstract and full-text examination based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and quality assessment.

Results: After data analysis was completed several themes and categories were identified. Most mental health interventions were community based and adopted Cognitive Behavioural Therapy’s principles. There was also a school based mental health intervention that adopted creative arts. However, all yielded promising results in alleviating harmful mental health symptoms. Key concepts like caregivers’ role, culture, activities employed and reflection on theories seem to follow similar patterns in the prime stud-ies. The results are discussed in relation to literature and are critically reflected upon.

Conclusion: Successful mental health interventions for refugee children and adolescents allow for hope to be fostered. Intervention designers and other professionals can use the discussed characteristics and factors in their approaches that seemingly can lead to resilience and post traumatic growth.

The Effects of Motor and Cognitive Secondary Tasks on Brain Activity and Gait Performance2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In everyday life, the ability to perform two tasks simultaneously, dual task, is an omnipresent issue. There are several factors that can limit an individual’s ability to dual task, such as neurological pathologies, or physical disabilities. A reduced ability to perform dual task activities can result in decreased gait performance, higher risk of falls, a high probability of reduced participation, as well as contributing to a number of deterioration processes in the body. There are numerous situations in which dual tasking is used in therapy, however, there is no consensus regarding what kind of dual task to train in order to have the most effective outcomes. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the relative effect of motor versus cognitive dual task on brain activity patterns and gait performance. Ten studies were identified in a systematic literature review in order to provide insight into the current status concerning the topic. The results showed high variations of analysed parameters and a very small amount of studies examining motor dual tasks. However, results indicated that cognitive dual tasks had a greater impact on brain activity. In regard to gait performance, no definite answer was found. Given the importance of dual tasks in everyday life and the numerous groups of people experiencing difficulties while dual tasking, the possibilities of adapting dual tasks in therapy should be a topic of future research.

Exploring Voice-Controlled System: Services and Consumer Preferences towards future usage within the Food Industry2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As voice assistants and voice-controlled devices continue to gain traction, companies worldwide are exploring the potentials that voice-controlled systems can offer - an ability to connect with users, drive customer attraction, gain market share, and build valuable relationships with market segments. Voice systems shift the interactions from human-based interaction or manually input to a process bound to electronic devices and channels. Now more than ever, a comprehensive understanding that outlines how voice-controlled systems can be integrated into a business strategy can lead to new means of firm success. Voice is one of the new elements of a unified Internet of Things network, facilitating device control and interaction through a new interface. To understand the potential of a voice control system as a system and the value it can add to firm offerings to build consumer relationships, the research paper utilizes existing theoretical frameworks. The Internet of Things paradigm establish the digital landscape, while Electronic Customer Relationship Management Model explores the importance of how voice-controlled systems can build valuable digital relationships. Finally, the Technology Acceptance Model aims to clarify how voice-controlled systems are currently perceived by consumers and the factors which contribute to their potential adaption. The paper investigates the potential implementation of voice-controlled systems within the food industry as three unique service offerings. Using the food industry as a foundation for voice-controlled services adds valuable and credible insights. Through an exploratory research approach this paper as well investigates if any significant factors influence customer attitudes towards current and future usage of voice-controlled system. The combination of an organizational and customer approach aims to add to Voice Controlled Systems research by providing a foundation of customer perceptions that may influence the implementation of this technology. Conclusively, the paper underlines the potential services most accepted by consumers that can be employ through voice-controlled systems within the food industry.

    Abstract [sv]

Barriers and facilitators to participate in physical activity for children and adolescents with Cerebral Palsy: A systematic literature review from 2009-20192020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Children and adolescents with Cerebral Palsy [CP] are not as physically active as their typically developing peers, which contributes to reduced physical fitness. Previous studies about participating in physical activity [PA] and disability in general have identified barriers and facilitators. However, less research has been performed targeting persons with CP, the most common physical disability in childhood. Previous studies mainly focused on the parental perspectives of their child with CP.

Aim: This systematic review aimed to identify and critically review the existing literature on barriers to and facilitators for children and adolescents with CP to participate in PA.

Method: A literature search was carried out in four online databases for social and health sciences to select peer-reviewed qualitative articles, identifying barriers to and facilitators for children and adolescents with CP to participate in PA. Studies were identified following the pre-established selection criteria, resulting in eight qualitative studies.

Results: Various personal and environmental factors were identified working as either barriers or facilitators, and yielded into two sub-categories and codes for personal and environmental factors. Sub-categories of identified barriers and facilitators within personal factors were physical abilities to participate in physical activity and psychological factors, and acceptance and relationships and possibilities to participate in PA within environmental factors.

Conclusion: Children and adolescents with CP are facing many personal and environmental barriers and facilitators to participate in PA. Further research is needed to develop an awareness program about CP to work with them, and to investigate the number of individuals required in a team to give this group the time and attention they need to master their skills.

Peer Victimization of Children and Adolescents with Intellectual Disabilities: A Systematic Literature Review from 2000-20202020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities are at increased risk for peer victimization in schools. Due to the deficits in their social, cognitive, and adaptive skills, these children face greater challenges to stand up for themselves thus, facing continued victimization.

Aim: This systematic literature review sought to critically identify the existing literature on predictors and outcomes which are associated with peer victimization in children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities in a school environment using the Biopsychosocial model.

Method: To conduct this study, a systematic search procedure was formulated to retrieve relevant scholarly articles from the chosen databases. Peer reviewed journals were searched to retrieve articles from education, psychology, and social sciences, published in English language between years 2000-2020. Only studies with children and adolescents ages 6 - 21 years were considered. A total of eight articles with five cross-sectional, two cohort, and one case-control studies qualified to answer the research questions.

Results: Findings varied across the social and psychological aspects. Social predictors and outcomes were found to be dominant for peer victimization. Internalizing Behaviour Disorders as a whole was identified as a psychological predictor with low self-esteem and depressive feelings as individual predictors and outcomes of peer victimization.

Conclusion: Children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities are vulnerable to peer victimization due to deficits in disability characteristics. Exposure to peer victimization can pose serious consequences on their social and psychological well-being. Implications for future research and methodological limitations of this study are also discussed.

Litteraturens känslor: En litteraturstudie om hur värdegrunden uppmärksammas i svenskundervisningen för årskurs F-3 genom textsamtal2020Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Låt romanen komma in – Transformativt lärande i gymnasieskolans litteraturundervisning2020Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The function of reading fictional texts in Swedish secondary school education has been questioned in public debate (e.g. Melin, 2016-07-17), even though the reading of fictional texts has been shown to be important to young people’s academic achievement (Jerrim & Moss, 2019). Swedish policy documents clearly state that upper secondary teaching of literature in the subject of Swedish is aimed at increasing the pupils’ self-awareness and their comprehension of experiences and perceptions of others (The Swedish National Agency of Education, 2011). However, results from a large-scale reading project show that Swedish teenagers find it difficult to reflect upon their own roles as readers of fictional texts (Nordberg, 2018). Therefore, this licentiate thesis targets upper secondary reading of fictional texts, and the possibility of using literary terminology pedagogically to visualize and develop pupils’ transformative learning processes. The overall research question posed is:

    - How can applied literary terminology be used in upper secondary literary studies todevelop pupils’ transformative learning processes?

A pilot study was conducted based on three focus group-sessions with teachers and the librarian at an upper secondary school. The main study was based on reading journals written by pupils reading John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel Låt den rätte komma in (2004) [Let the Right One In, 2008] as part of the Swedish 3 course. The methodological framework is inspired by participatory research. Consequently, this research-project uses an inclusive approach to the participants – 11 Swedish teachers, 1 librarian and 31 pupils – which means that they are considered as subjects rather than objects of knowledge. My own role in this project is tripartite: as a colleague, a teacher, and researcher. The pilot study was conducted in order to find out which possibilities and obstacles arose when the staff participants worked on teaching literature. The main study, within which the pupils are included as participants, focuses on advancing meta-perspectives of their own reading and made use of results from the pilot study and concepts derived from Felski’s (2008) ‘modes of textual engagement’.

The pilot study revealed tensions which obstruct the teaching of literature, including the teacher-experienced importance of pupils ‘stepping into’ stories, as opposed to a great many pupils’ reluctance both towards the text and the act of reading. Moreover, the tension between engaged reading and the heavy emphasis placed on assessable outcomes of teaching and learning was addressed by the teachers. The main study revealed that reluctance is an inherent part of reading fictional texts. Further, that the pedagogical application of concepts used in literary studies can support the reading process, make it move forward, encourage the adoption of meta-perspectives on reading and on the pupils themselves as readers, as well as supporting a cohesive view of the finalized text.

In summary, the findings suggest that applying literary concepts in literary studies supports pupils towards advancing their transformative learning and potentially points to a new way of making the goals section of the policy documents tangible for teaching and learning practices. According to this study, transformative learning-goals can be achieved if critical perspectives are preceded by individual engagement with the reading of the text. The suggested concept of transformative potential is beneficial to an analysis of the pedagogical function of a certain fictional text used in a certain learning situation geared towards transformative learning. This finding stands in contrast to trends of using reading as a means of writing practice or imaging historical epochs.

Labor mobility across jobs and space2020Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis consists of one introductory chapter and four independent papers. Each paper looks at different aspects of labor mobility, especially focusing on the transferability of specific human capital and the role of space for job matching.

The focus of the first paper is to examine how diversity of previous work experience of employees in creative industries matters for labor productivity. I further distinguish between related vs. unrelated occupation and industry experience to better understand how they matter for knowledge flows within a firm. The results show that diversity, and especially relatedness of previous occupational experience, are positively related to labor productivity.

In the second paper, I study how co-location of knowledge-intensive business services influences the innovative capacity of the sector. The results suggest that co-location facilitates labor mobility and thereby knowledge flows as well as innovation capacity across firms.

In the third and fourth papers, the focus shifts from the firm to the individual. The third paper examines how regional characteristics, especially Marshallian labor market pooling, influence the type of employment obtained after job displacement. The results show that regional industrial and occupational structures are crucial for facilitating job matches and occupational upgrades of individuals. The fourth paper examines whether there are wage returns to migration after job displacement, after the job match is considered. The results indicate that returns to migration are positive only when combined with a re-employment that matches the skills of the worker.

Post-entrepreneurship productivity2020Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In recent decades, public policies have been implemented to encourage individuals to become entrepreneurs. However, the individual and social benefits of such policies when some of these individuals eventually leave entrepreneurship are unclear. The purpose of this thesis is to empirically assess the productivity effects arising from the labor market experience of entrepreneurship, measured as self-employment, in subsequent wage employment.

This thesis consists of an introductory chapter and four independent papers. The four papers evaluate the consequences of the self-employment experience either for the individuals’ wages or for firm productivity when firms hire such individuals. All the papers compare the self-employment experience relative to wage employment.

The first paper estimates how individuals’ earnings are influenced in post-entrepreneurship careers when they return to wage employment. The findings suggest that former entrepreneurs suffer large earnings losses, especially in the first year as employees, and for the higher educated, these losses persist even after seven years in employment. The second paper studies the role of professional ties in entry wages when finding employment after self-employment. The results show that even when using former coworker ties in the hiring process, the former self-employed, except for those who have ties with incumbent employees when they had their own firm, earn significantly lower entry wages.

The third paper evaluates the productivity effects of different labor flows, with an emphasis on hiring former entrepreneurs. The paper finds that new hires who come from entrepreneurship, in general, are just as productive as those employees hired from another firm but are more productive than those coming from unemployment. The fourth paper analyzes how having employees with former entrepreneurship experience is related to firm productivity. The results show that having more former entrepreneurs as employees in a firm increases performance.

Lost and Found in the Age of Glocalization: A Framing Analysis of Indonesian Media in Reporting the SDGs2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a study of how three national newspapers in Indonesia frame and build the frames of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reportage. Indonesia is one out of the 193 countries who signed the SDGs, which is a form of a globalization project. Using the Critical Discourse Analysis, several articles from Kompas, The Jakarta Post (the JP), and Media Indonesia (MI) are analyzed. By using Lecheller and de Vreese’s stages of framing model, findings of the CDA are then explained and put into the context of frame-building. CDA is also applied through interviewing the editors-in chief to apprehend the professional ideology of media institutions which influences the frame-building and the form of frames in the news.

The study finds that frame in the news of the SDGs reportage in Kompas, MI, and the JP thematizing Indonesia’s achievements within three main themes namely gender equality, partnership, and environment. The introverted domestications with domestic outlook dominate the SDGs reportage. According to the editorial policy makers in the newspapers, the frame-building of frequent absence of the global outlook and extraverted domestication are influenced by the target readers  (Kompas), reader’s occupation and limited human and financial resources (the JP), and the editorial policy of supporting the government (the JP and MI).

Title: Patients’ experiences of having chronic leg ulcers caused by venous insufficiency – A qualitative literature review

Background: The most common cause of leg ulcers is venous insufficiency, which involves a disorder of the vein system caused by, among other things, congenital atrophies, trauma and/or hypertension. Venous system disorders cause venous wall weakness and endothelial disorders that develop into leg ulcers. The prevalence of chronic wounds increase with aging, it is highly individual whether health or illness is experienced due to the disease state.

Aims: To describe experiences of patients’ living with chronic leg ulcers caused by venous insufficiency.

Method: A qualitative literature review with inductive approach was used from the PubMed and CINAHL databases to find scientific support that answers the study’s purpose. Data analysis was preformed according to Evans model.

Results: The results describes patients’ experiences of living with chronic leg ulcers caused by venous insufficiency. This is based on nine articles whose material was compiled into three main categories: experiences of symptoms, experiences of relationships and experiences of life, and seven subcategories.

Conclusion: It is very important to pay attention to patients with chronic leg ulcers caused by venous insufficiency in order to alleviate their suffering and strengthen their sense of health. Experiences of pain, frustration, lack of knowledge, walking difficulties and isolation occur in the subcategories and are perceived as limitations in life.

Critical literacy som läsförståelseutvecklande arbetssätt i grundskolan: En litteraturstudie om critical literacyarbete i grundskolans årskurs 1-32020Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

1.I vilket syfte använder lärare skönlitteratur i undervisningen?

    Abstract [sv]

Företagsledning i tider av snabb förändring2013Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

As information technologies evolve quickly, the convergence between the technology platform of the firm and changes in business ecosystems raises the need for continuous renewal. This study explores how technology-based corporations’ drives renewal with new business areas, coping with organizational tensions invited by rapid change. Prominent theories assume that renewal-associated tension obstructs the renewal process and should consequently be eliminated. This assumption, however, is problematic since tension is also a source of firm growth, and eliminating it reduces strategic renewal to a zero-sum game. Therefore, a theory of strategic renewal needs to stress the properties of tensions and how these can drive growth. The dissertation approaches the problem of theory development, asking how the renewal process is sustained in technology-based corporations exposed to rapidly changing environments.

Using the extended case method, the study addresses prominent theorizing about dynamic capabilities and examines new business development in three firms, ABB, Ericsson, and Saab, considering how they sustained the renewal process in the face of technological change, crises, and other tension-laden events in the first decade of the 21st century. The empirical study reveals how properties of tension constitute an inherent, socially constructed force that becomes a latent impetus underlying the renewal process. This feature can be termed paradoxical tension because its social dimensions appear irrational and absurd when juxtaposed to technological change and growth creation in the firm. Because paradoxical tension may develop as imperceptibly latent it challenges those who manage renewal across changeable environment. However, too frequent reorganizations of the division of units between existing and new businesses can be devastating for innovation and growth throughout the renewal process.

In sum, a theory is developed that explains how actors in evolutionary systems of dynamic capabilities handle various types of paradoxical tension that ensures a firms prosperity and continuous renewal. This theory improves our knowledge of whether the firm possesses adequate entrepreneurial management capacity to generate new business areas that continuously renew the firm. Paradoxical tension is a reality that affects firm growth, and strategy theorists as well as executives need to address this problem of learning.

Användning av smartmobiler i arbetet: En kvalitativ intervjustudie2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Varför lämnar högskolestudenter Jönköping efter examen?: En kvalitativ studie om kompetensflykt2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Prevention Programs against Child Sexual Abuse for Preschool-aged Children: A Systematic Literature Review from 1980-20202020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) is a severe crime committed worldwide, which impairs the development of children and juveniles severely. Due to a high number of victims in early childhood, one prevention strategy, which is dedicated to the prevention education of children, is considered to be applied already in the preschool setting. The purpose of this literature review was to depict prevention programs against CSA for preschool-aged children regarding the curricula, and outcomes. A systematic database search was conducted in six databases ensuing in 15 articles. After applying a qualitative assessment, 13 studies were implied for analyzing. Programs included in this paper presented a variety of different learning contents, delivery forms, and teaching methods. The aims of the studies pointed to similar purposes, such as increasing children’s CSA knowledge and self- protection skills. However, the outcomes of the studies differed. The increase of knowledge that was demonstrated in each study mostly pertained at posttest. Outcomes of protection skills were diverse but mainly describing an enhancement. The CSA phenomenon is complex to address, especially regarding preschoolers, and measurement can only capture data that is quantifiable. Besides the limitations of this systematic literature research, practical implications and future research were addressed.

Digitaliseringens effekter på det psykologiska kontraktet: En kvalitativ studie av sociala representationer2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study was of an exploratory nature. The purpose was to explore the effects of digitalization on the psychological contract; a focus that has not been noticed in previous research. A qualitative design based on the theory of social representations was chosen (Moscovici, 2000). Fifteen employees (11 female and four male) with varying occupations in different types of organizations participated. Data were collected with semi-structured interviews and then analyzed with thematic analysis. In short summary, the results showed that digitization is represented in the collective consciousness as positive expectations, social distancing, digitization as a mediating party in the psychological contract and its consequences for a social contract. These understandings of the ongoing digitization process are discussed in the report. They have a potential impact on how different organizations and companies implement digital technology.

    Abstract [en]

The main point of this study was to research on how the description of biomedicine was described and valued in educational material for upper secondary school.  To assist this research, this study took the help from two theorist, Francis Fukuyama and Bart Simon. These two individual had vast differences in how they view biomedicine and its relationship with the perspective of what defines a human. Therefore it was essential that these two individuals were included to assist and aid the research, by pointing out their different argument on why biomedicine had different interpretations. The study showed that a majority of the educational materials had an open and reflective questionnaire about biomedicine and it was often built around letting the pupils think and analyze about different ethical events regarding biomedicine. Another point that also showed up was that a minority of the educational material, didn´t even mention biomedicine and instead decided to point out other part of ethics that did not include biomedicine of any sorts. While other educational material often compared biomedicine to older form of science like the race biology from the beginning of the 20th century or bringing up the argument of  crossing the line between man and God and what our roles in the world is. These educational material had a more critical view to biomedicine and had more argument that pointed out negative attributes then they did with the positive. A noteworthy point that also came out from this study, was that the majority of educational material had similar attributes and arguments that Bart Simons mention in his theories. Meanwhile those educational material that had more of a critical viewpoint toward biomedicine, followed those argument that Francis Fukuyama had discussed in his theory. The conclusion of this research showed that most of these educational material had different form of influence in their way of describing biomedicine but most had reflective and open questionnaire when regarding the description of biomedicine.

Female and male audiences' perception on a plant-based (Vegan) diet after having viewed the documentary film What the Health: How perception on a plant-based diet (Vegan) changes after having watched the documentary film What the Health2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Veganism (or following a PBD) is scientifically proven to be one of the possible answers to the environmental, ethical and health issues our society is currently facing. The documentary film What the Health advocates this claim and presents the tremendous impacts, meat and dairy production and consumption, have on our environment, our personal health and for the people living on our planet. The documentary’s attempt of persuading people to adopt a PBD remained unanswered and was the chosen case-study for this research on audience reception and media effects. The purpose of this research is to provide new empirical data on how the documentary film What the Health changes females’ and males’ perception of a PBD. Using a qualitative method of in-depth interviews, this study aimed to understand how the documentary film What the Health changes females’ and males’ perception of a PBD in times of the 21st century Vegan social movement. Using theoretical insights from the following theories: Framing theory, schema theory, social representation theory, social cognition theory and the concept of hegemonic masculinity, this study aimed to assess whether the documentary film What the Health contributed to perception changes among its audience. And whether gender differences were prominent. The findings of this study indicated perception changes of a PBD among its audience. Preconceptions of Veganism as a social trend or for ethical justifications were changed to understanding people’s individual motivations for attaining such a diet. Overall, no significant gender differences were detected. The social determinant of perceived restrictions within a social context were the most dominant factors of not transitioning to a PBD. Meat is undoubtedly an inherent and substantial part of people’s lives and restricting oneself from it is not perceived to be the answer to environmental, personal health and ethical issues. However, the audience was observed to admire Vegans for their discipline and strength. This study indicated that the documentary film What the Health might have an effect on its audience in the long term, which is proposed as future research respectively.

Spatial organization of retail activities2020Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a compilation of four independent papers that examine the spatial process of retail location. The central question I ask is how changes in access to consumer demand affects retail in terms of size and survival. I empirically analyze these aspects on municipality, neighborhood and firm level using Swedish data from Statistics Sweden, HUI Research AB and Datscha Sweden.

The first paper (co-authored with Sven-Olov Daunfeldt, Oana Mihaescu and Niklas Rudholm) examines the effect of durable goods big-box retailer IKEA entry on retail net turnover and employment in the municipalities of entry and their neighbors. In the second paper I assess the effect of IKEA entry on firm level net turnover and employment of retail, restaurants, and accommodation firms at varying distances from the new IKEA. The third paper (co-authored with Johan Klaesson) addresses the relationship between entry of out-of-town located shopping malls and the exit of incumbent stores. We examine how the probability of exit relates to the order of the goods that are sold by the retailers and how local density of demand influences the outcome. In the third paper I examine changes in food store access by proximity on the neighborhood level and how this is related to population density.

    Abstract [en]

Social classes have been existing in Swedish society in a couple of centuries and even today there are obvious class markers in Swedish society. Despite the existence of social classes today we discuss less about class. In every human relation there are always power relations.  To be able to emphasise class markets and power relations in Swedish society this study will be using a case, which is the series Quicksand. The series Quicksand takes place in a county town outside of Stockholm. The fundamental narrative is about why the main character Maja Norberg has been involved in a school shooting.

When analysing both class and power relations the intersectional intercommunion is commonly used. Consequently, the intersectional perspective has a big role in this study. This study is based on a feminist theoretical framework and the case is analysed with the multimodal critical discourse analysis method. The questions that we use to analyse the material are “How are the class distinction and the power relations framed from an intersectional perspective in Quicksand?”, “How are the characters’ relation to power and how does it move between them?” and “How are the power positions affected due to the characters’ gender and ethnicity?”

The analysis of this study shows that class distinctions and power relations are reflected in settings, attribute and lexical choices. The most common intersectional intercommunion was between class and ethnicity. Which of the characters may be due to class, gender, knowledge or ownership of a product that someone else is dependent on.

The end discussion shows that the intersectional concurrence can both be an advantage or a disadvantage among the characters. The power relations are constructed in different ways and there are always an aspirations and combat to be in power. The class differences are pointed out in Quicksand. There are some characters that will keep the class distinction and there are characters that want to live in a classless society.

Surfplattor i undervisningen: En litteraturstudie av hur surfplattor påverkar skrivutvecklingen i årskurs 4-62020Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]
