"Man måste tala med händer och fötter": En kvalitativ intervjustudie om hur sfi-elever upplever språkinlärning2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: As of today, the knowledge of lean production, and its development into the construction industry, lean construction, has been well described in most of the necessary aspects. In what way lean could affect the work environment in a construction project, be it good or bad, has to date not been thoroughly documented. In Sweden, lean has been mildly tested in the construction industry but the results concerning the effect it has on the work environment is yet to be found in the literature. Lean itself is a strategy for manufacturing processes. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the knowledge of lean itself and how it, theoretically, could affect the work environment at construction site.

Method: To achieve the purpose, documents from the participating company concerning work environment has been analysed in order to visualize what routines the company currently follows. In addition to this, seven interviews were conducted with employees of the company. The persons participating in the interviews were asked about how well they think the work is organized on the construction site right now and furthermore about their thoughts of lean-concept that had been produced, based on the theoretical framework.

Findings: Based on the theoretical framework and findings in the empirical data that has been collected, a lean-concept was developed and refined. The concept includes what routines and what documents that are vital when implicating lean in an effective way, and also what needs to be considered in order not to impede the work environment at the construction site.

Implications: Implicating a well-structured lean-concept in the construction process of a project would, theoretically, most definitely improve effectiveness within the project. It could also improve the work environment of the project, considering the risk awareness and the easier waste-control that the concept could provide. However, it could also make it worse through the elimination of variance and monotonous work tasks that are needed to improve the effectiveness.

Limitations: The most important limitations that the study has had is the fact of it only being a theoretical implication of a lean concept, not a practical case study of the sort. This is due to the defined and limited time that project has had. In addition, the study has also had to limit its’ research to the frame supplement phase of the construction project. This is because of the fact that the work with the theoretical framework and the empirical study would have been too overwhelming, had the study considered the entire production phase of a construction project.

Socialt hållbar förbättring av bostadsmiljön för ett miljonprogramområde: Miljonprogrammets område Lextorp2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: At the beginning of the 20th century there was a large housing deficiency in Sweden. Over time the housing deficiency developed into a political issue and resulted in the million-program. One million homes would be built during 1965-1974. The million-program constitutes a large part of Sweden’s total housing stock. Many of these areas quickly became segregated and socio-economically weak. Municipalities are now faced with the decision to either phase out or develop the areas. The purpose is to investigate which measures can contribute to a better social sustainability and attractiveness in million-program areas. The aim of the study is to investigate which measures are effective in improving a sustainable housing environment in a millionprogram area. Method: The study has been conducted as a qualitative study in the form of interviews. Document analysis has been implemented where the information has contributed as a support but also as an eye-opener to find different solutions that are relevant in the case study. Observation in the area has been made to give the author a perception of the area. A literature study has been done to support the investigation and to receive information to create a foundation for the study. Findings: The main result of the analysis is that a key factor in achieving a sustainable housing environment is a major focus on social sustainability. The work with the social sustainability should be focused and deliberately with long-term perspectives. There are many ways of working with social sustainability, but a big part is to promote integration into socio-economically weak residential areas. The social issues form a basis for achieving a result and answering the questions set for the study. In order for the residents to have as pleasant living environment as possible, they should be given influence in various decisions made for the area. Implications: Proposed measures must be adapted to the specific conditions of each area. In order to contribute to an increased social sustainability it is important that the environments of the areas are well managed and completely clean. Social sustainability can also be improved through active work on social issues, which also contributes to increased attractiveness. The concept of social sustainability also includes urban design. A city that is well designed, safe and pleasant and has a good and functioning living environment is something desired. Limitations: The study is limited to only one million-program area since there is neither time nor resources available to map the problem on a larger scale. Own proposals are not presented, neither from an economic nor an architectural perspective, which could affect how the questions set for the study are answered. The focus is on whether planned measures are effective and whether these measures are sufficient to make an area attractive again.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The global concrete consumption amounts to 25 gigatons annually, making it the most widely used building material (Petek Gursel, et al. 2014). The continued increasing world population in connection with urbanization will lead to a greater demand for cement. The problem with the increased manufacturing process of cement is that carbon dioxide emissions in 2020 will account for 10-15 % of global CO2 emissions, compared with the values measured in 2016, which only reached 5-8 % (Habert & Ouellet-Plamondon, 2016). The aim of the thesis is to analyse stages in the manufacturing process of prefabricated concrete from an environmental point of view with consideration to CO2 emissions. This will later result in providing concrete improvement measures or alternatively only provide useful knowledge for the concrete industry’s future. The stages that will be analysed are transport, concrete, rebar (reinforcement) and cellular plastic production.

Method: The methods chosen for the implementation of the thesis were Literature Studies and Interviews. The purpose of the literature study was to educate the authors on the subject and collect various results from current research. The interviews contributed to the necessary information to be able to carry out the analyses at work.

Findings: The thesis has resulted in a total amount of CO2eq emissions in four different stages in the concrete manufacturing process. Cement proved to be the biggest contributing factor to CO2eq emissions. There are several different measures to reduce CO2eq emissions in the concrete manufacturing process. The measures discussed the most frequently concern the cement production, which is favourable for the concrete production as a whole. The discussion also highlights measures taken in action at a concrete factory level.

Implications: This study shows that cement accounts for the majority of the total CO2 emissions for concrete production. Therefore, much focus placed on improving the cement production with consideration to CO2 emissions is necessary. This does not mean that less focus should aim on research for green transport, insulation production and steelmaking. All productions stages have potential for improvement. Hence, it is important to continue the research to reduce the total CO2 emissions in the production of prefabricated concrete elements.

Limitations: The study was limited to the manufacturing process of prefabricated concrete. A specific project HUS F was analysed for CO2 emissions in four production stages; concrete, reinforcement, insulation materials and transport.

Hur undervisas nyreligiositet?: En intervjustudie med gymnasielärare om nyreligiositet2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Language skills: How teachers in Years 7-9 prioritize and teach language skills in their English lessons2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to study how teachers of English, in years 7-9 focus on various language skills in their lessons. To do this it is necessary to answer several questions. The first question is what language skills are the most important, according to research and steering documents. The second question is what language skills the teachers see as the most important and whether these are the same skills that they focus their teaching on. The third question is what reason the teachers have to focus on certain language skills. The fourth question is what methods the teachers use to teach these language skills. These questions are answered through theories of English foreign language teaching, especially the communicative approach. Previous research shows that all skills are important for English language proficiency. However, the results from the interviews show that the teachers tend to focus on reading, writing and to a lesser extent listening. This is according to the teachers because it is the skills that the students are least proficient in. Furthermore, there are several methods presented that explain how certain language skills may be taught. The language skills studied are reading, writing, speaking and listening. The results have been reached through semi-structured qualitative interviews with teachers working at a single school. The teachers’ answers, together with the theoretical background, have given several results. A result that emerged in this study was that there is a dissonance between what language skills teachers consider the most important and what language skills they teach in their classrooms.

What affects the choice of a JavaScript framework: Interviews with developers2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In recent years frameworks for JavaScript has become a large part of web development. There has been a lot of discussion between developers which framework to use when developing a project since there is a large pool of frameworks to choose from. This paper aims to find out what factors affects the choice of framework according to web developers in the business. The earlier studies found on the topic of JavaScript frameworks focuses on the technical aspects while this study will focus on researching the pragmatic internal and external factors that affects the choice of framework. This will contribute with a different view to the field in contrast to the existing technical studies. To find answers to the research question qualitative interviews with web developers at different companies were conducted. 5 companies agreed to participate, and a total of 8 web developers were interviewed. The interviews were recorded and later transcribed. The results were analyzed through a thematic analysis. By analyzing the results several different factors were found, and by finding connections in between them they were then categorized into different themes. The themes found was demand, usability, community and reputation. Through the discussion of the findings it was found that the factors influencing the choice of framework can vary depending on if it is a personal project or a larger project at a company. For personal projects user gratification was major factor, while in companies the ability to collaborate was one of the main factors. To answer the purpose of the study the choice of framework depends on who is using it, what kind of requirements a project has, the resources of a company, and the locations demands. Therefore, different frameworks can be suitable for different situations.

Mobile application onboarding processes effect on user attitude towards continued use of applications2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The growing popularity of smartphones in recent years has led to an increase in mobile application development and use. However, a large number of mobile applications are only used once before being removed. For companies and organizations to spend time and money on application development only to achieve low user retention rates is unsustainable. During their first interaction with a mobile application it is crucial that users find functionality and value quickly to avoid discontinuation of use. User onboarding is often implemented in mobile applications to aid in first time interaction, making onboarding processes subject of investigation for effect on user attitude towards continued use of mobile applications.

The study examined mobile onboarding processes and their effect on user attitude towards continued use of applications as well as the difference between onboarding processes effect on user attitude towards continued use of applications. The study was conducted within-subjects through a survey consisting of interaction with two prototypes with different onboarding processes and a questionnaire based on the technology acceptance model in order to investigate the variables of interest. The results of the survey were analyzed to measure the effects of the onboarding processes on the factors of the technology acceptance model and to investigate the differences between the onboarding processes.

The results showed that user onboarding has a positive influence on perceived usefulness, attitude towards use and intention to use. There was no significant difference between the different types of onboarding patterns effect on attitude towards continued use. The positive effects on attitude and intention to use confirmed that implementing onboarding processes in mobile applications could be beneficial for value proposition and user retention. The perceived usefulness proved to be the determining factor on attitude and intention to use.

Value Co-creation Practices in Brand Community of Airbnb2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Background: Value co-creation emerged at the beginning of the 21st century as a new way of understanding of value and its creation which occurs around individualized experiences of co-creation, leading to the creation of value that is exclusive to every person. In the essence of the concept of value co-creation lays the service-dominant logic of marketing. The investigation of value co-creation within brand communities has been emphasized in recent years. The practices of brand community members play a significant role in the value co-creation. Since Airbnb has never been looked as a brand community in the value co-creation literature, it remained unclear how value can be co-created through the practices of Airbnb community members.

Purpose: How value is co-created between brand community members of Airbnb (between hosts and guests and guests themselves) through their practices in their experiences within the corporeal world?

Method: In order to meet the purpose of this study, authors applied a qualitative method. Further, a netnographic strategy has been employed which led us to collect online-posted reviews of Airbnb guests from Airbnb website. Authors used purposive sampling by selecting the only guests who had the previous experience of stay in Airbnb accommodations in cases of on-site hospitality. 155 reviews of different guests from 31 accommodation profiles were collected in three waves of data collection. Moreover, a grounded theory coding was employed in order to analyze the data.

Conclusion: We identified 14 sub-categories of value-creating practices that emerged under four major categories, namely: practice of sharing, practice of communicating, practice of saving, and practice of authenticating. Further, in the process of elaboration of main elements of practices (i.e. objects, doings, and meanings), we found general connections of these elements within the practices of hosts and guests (i.e. Airbnb community members) that helped us to understand how value is co-created in their experiences within the corporeal world.

Värdeflödesanalys i ett råmaterialflöde: En fallstudie där icke-värdeskapande aktiviteter och dess orsaksfaktorer identifieras2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose with this study is to map a raw material value flow analysis and identify non-value-creating activities and propound suggestions for improvement.

Method – The study is a case study based on an inductive approach with quantitative elements. The used methods is of a qualitative character since the study is based on interviews and interpretation based on observations of the basic data collection. The data collection has been done through literature studies, interviews, observations and document studies. In order to achieve high credibility, it has been important that the design of interview questions can be linked to fulfillment of the purpose. This work was done to minimize the risk of systematic errors.

Findings – The study's results are based on a mapping of a flow where a current analysis was carried out to then later end in a value flow analysis. Based on the value flow analysis, it appeared that a shortage in the flow was high levels of waste. The largest identified waste was a lack of quality, mainly due to the production of defective products. This shortcoming also affects large parts of the flow. The measures proposed in the study are to implement standards through a change in the culture of the company, and to continue to work on continuous improvements.

Implications – The result, which shows the importance of working with streamlining waste, which in this case leads to a lack of quality, mainly in the form of production of defective products. The study can be seen as a practical contribution to manufacturing companies, by embracing these proposals for action, it should generate a better consensus on the quality of the business. Also a theoretical contribution where further research could look at how to technically and psychologically implement a change like this.

Limitations – It can be difficult to generalize the results as this is a study conducted as a one-case design. Furthermore, it is also complex to investigate and develop a study that shows how quality is linked to corporate culture.

Hur bostäder kan utformas med innovativa dagsljussystem2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: There is a housing shortage taking place in the municipalities and cities of Sweden due to an increased population and urbanization. To manage this, the urban planning has been altered and transformed into densifying the cities. The result of this strategy is dense and tall buildings with insufficient qualities such as daylighting and view out. Studies have shown that daylight is of importance for the human health, in correlation to this the criticism against the old-fashioned daylight regulations have increased and a new set have been introduced. In addition, new methods have been developed to optimize the energy balance and to increase the daylighting. By acknowledging these factors, it is of great importance to study how an increased housing stock can be made without the expense of the daylighting quality of a dwelling. The report aims to study what an implementation of innovative daylighting systems can carry out for dwellings in Sweden.

Method: A secondary data analysis was conducted of innovative daylighting systems. This was made in combination with a focus group which involved professional experienced participants to review the design of dwellings in consideration of daylight. Based on the result of the methods mentioned above a case study was conducted to examine the consequences of an innovative daylighting system.

Findings: By controlling the daylight supply, the functions of a dwelling could be situated differently. An IDS in the shape of a light-pipe was a suitable solution for a dwelling made accordingly to Swedish standards and provided daylight to the less illuminated areas of the apartment. With this solution a refurbishment of a complex building was made possible. As for the IDS, it is considered as an option for increasing the daylight supplement. To acknowledge further positive outcomes with the system from a design perspective, a reassessment of the current daylight regulations must be done. A re-evaluation of the regulations is considered to prevent the exploitation insufficient dwellings.

Implications: The current daylight regulation is not sufficient. This prevents the opportunity to establish new design concepts which considers the quality of the dwelling. With new technology complex and empty buildings can be re-done and acquire a new purpose. A modernized interpretation and a new technology for daylight is thereby an option for achieving a sustainable urban densification.

Limitations: The study is limited to only assess one building which decreases its ability to be commonly accepted. However, the majority of the buildings prerequisites are common as they apply to regulations and qualities of a dwelling.

Collaborative Product Introduction within Extended Enterprises2005Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The trend of outsourcing within the electronic industry has contributed to the creation of new types of extended enterprises. These extended enterprises must be able to manage a challenging situation with shorter product life cycles and increased collaboration between companies during the vital product introduction process. For the electronic industry, which is currently acting in an “era of hyper-competition”, it is a challenge to implement an efficient and flexible collaboration within an extended enterprise during the product introduction process. In the product introduction process, a product design is prepared for and transferred into production.

During the course of this research, the electronic industry has changed continuously. Empirical data were first collected within an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) that was responsible for its own production. Based on a strategic decision at the OEM, a new extended enterprise was established. In general, these new extended enterprises within the electronic industry consist of: a “product owner” in the form of an OEM that owns the product design and its brand; a “producer” in the form of an Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) company that is responsible for the production; and suppliers of services, material, components, equipment etc. However, in the later stages of this research the studied EMS was responsible for the product introduction, production and distribution of the product to the end user. In order to compare and contrast trends and lessons learned in similar industries, case studies within the mechanical engineering and aerospace industries also were performed.

The dissertation primarily describes the process of collaborative product introduction (PI) within the electronic industry, and presents among other things a number of general conditions for efficient collaborative PI within an EE in that industry. First, a clearly communicated definition of what is included in product introduction is needed. A second condition is that early participation from all involved partners in the EE’s product introduction process supports efficient collaboration. Third, clear communication and information handling within the extended enterprise – both internally and externally – was found to facilitate collaboration. Fourth, business approaches should be built on trust, reliability and respect for each other’s competence. Finally, the importance of cultural awareness, both between different companies and countries, cannot be ignored. This research also presents a framework for supporting collaborative product introduction within an extended enterprise, which serves to both synthesize and summarize much of the research.
